I needed new shoes, so looked at whether I should upgrade from SPD pedals to Road Pedals. Hopefully the video is useful?

a video that summarizes everything briefly and precisely. No need to be over 3 minutes. Well done! it really helped!

I'm sure ex World Hour record holder and World Champion Graeme Obree may debunk these myths about pedals. He set his records on Dura Ace single side style SPD and to this day rides SPD. If it's good enough for him I'm sure it's more than adequate for all people watching this video. I personally ride SPD after years of struggling with traditional road style Look cleats. I have them mounted on both a set of MTB shoes and Road Shoes and can honestly say I notice no determinable difference in performance but there's many advantages to the SPD platform which I feel just makes sense to the average road rider.

Nice one for summarising that so nicely. Could not agree more :)

Thank you. In science, that is known as an elegant statement: it conveys a maximum amount of information in a minimum of language. Please make more, similar, videos.

I know this is an old vid at this point, but its worth noting (because a surprising amount of people don't know) that light single sided SPD road specific pedals and shoes are a thing that exists. Shimano are even happy to let their PD-ES600 model bear the Ultegra brand. The weight difference is only a negligible 29g compared to Ultegra (road), 14g compared to 105 and compared to Tiagra (which is a better comparison on price) they are 31g LIGHTER.

stiff road shoes are generally cheaper then stiff MTB shoes. To get full carbon soled MTB shoes you are looking at around $250-300

Botranger espresso. Road shoes with SPD cleats. The best of both worlds.

My new SPD Shimano ME-3 shoes also have the racket system.

The size of the contact area is irrelevant when the soles are completely stiff.

My take, judging a shoe on how well one can walk in it for a road bike is not a good standard. I never walk in road shoes except for the occassional pit stop for rest. I'm also not clipping in & out of my road shoes on my road rides a lot so that doesn't matter much either. Of course, I'm not talking for gravel use, but for specifically road riding, I'm on the bike 99% of the time so I prioritize on-bike performance and the wider platform and comfort level for many many miles trumps everything else.

This is a pretty bad comparison. The road shoe is of better quality than the mountain bike shoe so of course that one will feel better. Do this again but with identical shoes and I'm sure you won't feel a significant difference.

Shame the shoes don't match the bike
