Millions of tonnes of rock can fall from a mountain, flow like water and travel at the speed of an express train. Such landslides are surprisingly common; yet geologists are only now acknowledging their existence. Horizon traces the recent discovery of this type of landslide and predicts one that could generate a tidal wave big enough to inundate Pacific coastlines.

I was studying Geography at Queen’s Belfast when this was first shown, we’d just had some lectures on landslides. The next day most of us were talking about this programme!

It’s not strange.
It takes large trains miles to stop. It takes large ships miles to stop.
Rocks falling from a mountain shouldn’t be much different I would think.
