Canon SX50 HS vs SX40 HS

The groundbreaking Canon SX40 HS has been improved in the SX50 HS with a bigger zoom (50x over 35x), powerful Image Stabilization, and improvements in focus speed, RAW file output and ISO boost. But the Zoom and IS are the big news. Watch the side by side comparison and see if the changes make you want to upgrade or stick with the remarkable SX40.

SX50 for sure.

Like many other in-camera processing features i haven't used the shadow balancing one, I think the same feature was in the sx40. However I have used the "snow" setting when in a a high glare situation with lots of clouds to bring up a dark object. That worked better than trying to fix it later in photoshop.

I just bought an SX50 a few days ago on sale for only about $6 more than I paid for my SX 40 when it first went on sale! Till Nov. 29th, (here in the toronto are at Sears), it's $399, and Best Buy matched the price, also knocking off another $3 because of their price difference thing! Overall, I'd say the SX50 is better, but I think the SX40 focuses better in low light when really using the zoom. I think they're both great cameras, and, whenever I take one out, I can also take both batteries!

I wouldn't have imagined a 50X optical zoom a year ago! In 5 years from now, don't be surprised to see a 100X optical zoom, if not sooner!

1 - You can not use / take the tripod for all the photos / places ..
2 - was upgraded HS system that makes the pictures more clear, so despite the larger opening, the end result is the same!

The stabilization on the SX50 is excellent! I'll probably hold out for the SX60 or something if I can. Thank you!

In the superzoom pictures (140x for the SX40 and 200x for the SX50) I meant to say using the DIGITAL zoom not the optical zoom. Obviously the optical zooms are 35x and 50x.

Thanks for this informative video! The music style doesn't fit IMHO, but it is soft enough so it is bearable. :-) I love the length of your video: perfect!

nice comparison.. i like the stabilization on SX50... it's like using stabilizer ;p ...too bad that SX50's 120fps not supported 1280x720 resolution like Pana FZ200.

Yes, the limited aperture choices on the SX50 really limit depth of field or bokeh options, and the wide angle isn't really all that wide. I bought a screw on style adapter to try to get a wider angle but. The optics are poor. So zoom and stabilization are still its strong features, yeah RAW too, but really, how many casual photographers want to mess with RAW? None. As in all cameras, it comes back to taking clever, original pictures. The old Brownie could do that too.

Nice work it's teen a bit of a toss up between this camera and the Sony 200hv as the video looks better, it think the s50 is definitely the way to go

Thanks for posting. I love my SX-40, but this comparo does give me pause for thought. On the other hand, I bought mine last November, so I have to wonder what will Canon do next year this time?

The sx40hs has a setting that balances images by lightening darkened areas. I wonder if the sx50 has the same feature, but perhaps you have not been using it?

Is possible when the zoom is at maximum (200x) to make manual focus?

Youtubes processing greatly boosts a light background music track at the expense of voice. Music video with singing are especially hit. Good points, I will even further back off music. The original Final Cut Pro version has barely any music sound. YouTube!!,

I have a fantastic pair of image stabilized Canon IS 18 x 50 all-weather binoculars, the best available. They cost 4 times as much as the Canon SX50! No good video camera captures 12 MP stills, or has the flash and ISO range of this camera. Yes this camera is cheap and cheerful, trying to do too much for too little. But you want one item that you can stuff in your pack, don't care if it bumps around, does almost anything without accessories, for less than than $400. Pretty tough to beat...
