The way this ends with the instrumental version of "This Will Be The Day"; CRWBY knew. They knew all along that this was most likely the end and they weren't coming back to continue the story.

I have a volume 10/11 theory. Through sheer stupidity and incompetence caused by Team RWBY screwing around in Vacou, Mercury has got his hands on the Sword of Destruction. But due to its corruptive powers, Mercury goes crazy in a poorly written way and starts killing everyone in Shade Academy. Ruby Rose, in her infinite wisdom, decided to take Mercury and the sword into the city of Vacou, where all the innocent people are. This resulted in millions of people dead not just by Mercury’s hand but Ruby’s stupidity as well. This will cause Yang to get back at Mercury for ruining her reputation all the way back at volume 3 and starts beating him up for it. And there’s a love triangle subplot with Sun, Yang and Blake which seems pointless. But in order to make both the Bumblebee Shippers and Blacksun Shippers happy, Blake has a three way with both Yang and Sun, finally ending Volume 10/11.
