Having a story in mind BEFORE you go out shooting is maybe a good idea.

I agree with this, some of my client thinks that cool effects, transition, etc will make their video great.
but for me personally I always focus in making story out from the random videos that they sent to me and it makes tough for me if the client don't have any story from the content that they filmed I mean it makes editing complicated if you don't have story. I noticed it in other popular film maker or even not popular yet, I wonder how their videos has more views even though they have small followers?
it's because they have a story. even vloggers that only uses low graphic camera on their phones when filming they still have more views, it's not about the equipment or any effects it's about the story, James cameron once said, all great movies even if the graphics is bad or the audio is bad the viewers can still understand what they are watching.
it's all about the story.

I enjoy watching videos that has a story even without cool transitions, cinematography or special effect than a video that do so.

Sometimes no story is a story itself. Some videos are meant to be experienced, feeling the emotion of the cinematography. Making your own story. Etc. Rather than having some
Forced narrative and putting the focus on that. I think its a genre choice to have a bunch of “random shot” added together. Its all preference of course.

lickd pricing seems pretty opaque. They tell you it starts from $8 and scales according to how many viewers you have. There doesn't seem to be anywhere where you can see how it scales. Also, they have no cookie opt-out.
