Longplay and review for "The Abduction Of Oscar Z" on the Amstrad CPC 464!

Every year the CPCRetroDev game creation contest is held, and Amstrad fans across the globe eagerly await the fresh batch of new games. The rules are - it must run on a stock CPC 464, from cassette, in 64k of memory (no expansions) and it cannot be a 'multi-load'. This does limit somewhat developers can do. So when Dreamin' Bits came in this year and stormed the contest winning 1st place with Abduction - jaws hit the floor. A game this gorgeous looking and sounding, with full screen smooth scrolling at what looks like 50fps, including the wonderfully animated sprites - just shouldn't .... couldn't be possible!!! BUT IT IS!! Not only that, but it's original, fresh, plays and controls fantastically, and is an utter joy and blast to play!

Could this be game of the year??! Let's find out...

Simply stunning...Our mind would had blown away if something like this had arrived to our cpc homes back in the 80s...As the control of the CRTC gets more and more documented we are entering a new era of CPC games...

While I'm a C64 fan, the Amstrad CPC continues to impress me. This game is simply awesome in every way - other than as you say the number of levels. I've just finished playing Portal for the C64 and love that game, but like The Abduction of Oscar Z, far too short and just leaves you wanting more.

Love the smooth scroling on this game. Well chosen colours too. Would have been great to get the dreaming bit developers on here too to talk about the making of the game. Maybe something to consider for the future Xyphoe?

This thoroughly deserved to win the 2020 #CPCRetroDev Game Creation Contest and it scored _well_ above all the other games. It's hard to believe it's capable of running on an unexpanded CPC464! I rated it 10 out of 10 on my own site, but I don't award half marks. ;-)

Yes, there are only three levels, but I found the second and third levels to be a tough challenge. As usual, Xyphoe makes it look easy!

absolutely hate runner games but this feels different to that. Lovely game in many ways. The music reminds me of something like Typhonn Thompson or Karateka as in very proffesionally written and not bedroom. Terrific stuff. Cool vid

Amazing! Runs on just a 464?!? Wow just wow. Too short is the only thing against it. They could add like a shooter level on the saucer and or a levels going from right to left.

I could see a R-Type like set of levels for the trip home an easy fit looking at that gameplay easily giving a few more levels. Love to see this with the plus palette as well. Gorgeous looing game!

Could this perfect magic scrolling also work in a more standard platform game? Like, could it work for a game like the great Operation Alexandra? I really hope these developers continue making games for the cpc. It's magical. It's a dream. I cry tears of joy.

Hi, got a problem with this game, dunno if I'm the only one! On a CPC6128 the graphic is too dark that I can barely see the action. The presentation and the title screen are perfect.

I really hope CPCRetroDev will allow for 6128 128k games too

I think it is using CRTC registers to hardware scroll at 2 mode 0 pixels resolution but with 2 screens in RAM offset by 1 pixel for finer scrolling and double buffering. I suspect that's why you can't stop the scrolling, because it is always drawing the next frame on a screen scrolled by 1 pixel.

Perhaps recycling the three levels but with more and more obstacles and faster baddies would let people keep pushing high scores at least.

Beautiful game, but seems way too easy...?

It's very good, but Spanish devs should really send their English text to someone for proof reading before commiting. In the intro, "Dinner gets cold" should be "Dinner is getting cold", "What happens" should be "What's happening" (both present progressive issues), and "it" should be "him/they".
