Diphenhydramine

Generic Name: diphenhydramine

Trade Name: Benadryl Indication allergy, anaphylaxis, sedation, motion sickness, antitussive

Action: antagonizes effects of histamine, CNS depression

Therapeutic Class: allergy, cold and cough remedy, antihistamine, antitussive

Pharmacologic Class: none

Nursing Considerations:
 may cause drowsiness, anorexia, dry mouth, nausea, chest tightness, thick secretions, hypotension, blurred vision, headache
 anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, sedation)
 assess purpose of medication prior to giving it
 assess allergies, sleep patterns, cough and lung sounds
 patient should avoid other over-the-counter cough and cold remedies

I was given Benadryl during an ER visit for fever and it shot my heart rate up to 148. Very scary feeling, but I found out I was allergic to Benadryl through this experience.

Does anyone know if this can give you leg pains i notice at night i get pain in my right leg that stops me from sleeping which is what i use it for it may not be causing this but i dont know.

I stopped taking this Nytol Diphenhydramine 25 mg on Sunday Last week so 8 days going and i still feel the stupid headaches from it

Any tips or medicines to kill this thing out of my system?

I took it for sleeping (OTC pill), bit I didn't feel like getting out of bed the next day, feel headache and slow all day the next day. Is it normal?

This is highly educating .Can you also mention how Benadryl is very helpful to treat Hyperparathyroidism or how histamine works on Parathyroid gland .

The doctor gave me this med bec i had allergy bfore.. Aftr a day of taking it, i feel a lot of muscle pain all over my body .. May i know is it normal ? I get so nervous abt it. Help me. Tnx

Is it bad to take long term? I took 200 milligrams every day for 6 months a few years ago. Now when I take it it doesn't do anything.

I tell you what I like to do I like to take four Tylenol PMs when I need to go to sleep wait for about 45 minutes and then smoke a big fat blunt I love it
