Discover with us the most fascinating facts about Monasteries of Meteora - Greece . The impressive rocks of Meteora, a rock formation in Central Greece, are a home to 6 Greek Orthodox monasteries which belong to the most important religious landmarks in Greece. Out of 24 monasteries constructed during 14th and 15th century on the top of steep rocks, only 6 are still active with a small number of monks and nuns inhabiting them. The largest and oldest monastery is a male monastery of the Great Meteoron situated 615 meter above sea level. Founded in the 14th century, it is open all year long. You can visit not only wine cellars and the blackened kitchen but also an impressive cathedral richly-decorated with frescoes and a sacristy filled with the skulls of monks, who used to live here, lying on shelves.
The second largest monastery is the Holy Monastery of Varlaam named after the monk Varlaam. He started the construction of this monastery around 1350. However, after his death it was abandoned for almost 200 years when 2 monk brothers came and started to reconstruct this monastery. Today you can visit this holy place and admire not only the 15th century chapel decorated with frescoes but also a wine cellar and the 16th-century oak barrel which was used for water storage and has a capacity of 1,200 liters.
