Get an inside tour into the making of Pharis & Jason’s Romero's new album 'Tell ‘Em You Were Gold' on Smithsonian Folkways. Experimenting with a new-to-them process, the duo turned an old barn into a recording studio and used the sounds their banjos make as the inspiration for the songs on the album. Jason’s master banjo building, time in the banjo shop, life with kids and gardens, rivers, adventures and old musical friends are all part of the journey

Directed, filmed, and edited by Eva Anandi Brownstein and Trent Freeman.
Featuring Pharis & Jason Romero, John Reischman, John Raham, Indi Romero, Sy Romero, Grace Forrest, and Patrick Metzger.

'Tell 'Em You Were Gold' is available June 17, 2022, on CD and digital. The LP version, which features bonus tracks, will be available in late 2022/early 2023.

Pre-order/stream:

Pharis and Jason Romero are pure craftspeople. A renowned banjo builder, Jason spent years developing his own personal designs, and on Tell ‘Em You Were Gold, his handmade instruments take center stage. Over a half dozen uniquely crafted banjos are played by the duo in the course of the album. There’s conviction and delicacy in this music, which ranges from duets that showcase the pair’s deep psychic and artistic connection to solo banjo meditations and full band romps. Recorded over six days in an old barn in Horsefly, British Columbia, the album displays the multiple Juno Award-winning duo playing music that is honest, direct, and reflective of life’s beauty and knottiness.

By the end of this utterly beautiful production, I had tears in my eyes. The full tapestry of your lives and music, shared and woven through time strike me as an example of the very best, most grounded of human existences - the choices made and sustained and the devotion underlying these choices are truly inspirational.

Can't get enough of Jason and Pharis so just when I thought "it doesn't get any better than this" John Reischman walks through the door. Good lord!!

Pharis, I love your minimalist accompaniment to "Cannot Change It All." It's just perfect to my sensibilities (I'm also a guitarist). I imagine it's what Freddie Green would have played if he had been born and lived in Horsefly! The Fretboard Journal podcast brought me here, although I've been a listener and fan for many years. I greatly admire the life you've built for yourselves. You seem like you and Jason would be good friends to have. Thank you for all the wonderful music!
