The problem with the segment on artificial intelligence is that the term "conscious" was never defined. I am often surprised to learn that the person with whom I'm having a discussion doesn't even define certain words the same way that I do. Until you establish definitions, most discussions on philosophical topics are fruitless; you'll just be talking past each other.

Awesome reflections and lessons for life: „Beliefs are established by our experience“. „You have to rely on imagination“. Thank you.

I'd love to learn what Dennett has to say, but the background music is really annoying, and I'll have to find him somewhere else. This is not an infomercial.

Absolutely beautifully well put. Wholeheartedly agree with this man, after decades of brushing his views aside. He has it!

I think its funny that a person I know rests his laurels with this guy, and breaks every rule of this video.

Dennett is the epitome of smart, thoughtful and insightful. Sharp as a razer but never comes across as egotistical.

I ask all to question the very notion of belief. We don't believe the sun shines we know it. If you know god then what purpose is there to believing in him/her/it? Most belief is a system of indoctrination from our childhood, it is not a choice. Doesn't this deprive god of judgement in that people did not choose on their own, they were instead indoctrinated? If the existence of god could be proved or disproven it would have already occurred. Hence belief without knowing for certain. Belief arises from not knowing, we look at life and want to understand meaning we don't know. Then we choose something that matches our personal traits. Then we say we know. If some believers are correct that means the rest are incorrect and worshiping the wrong god. I think these are questions that deserve our attention.

I can tell you what is missing for development: I even made a scientific discovery about consciousness: All people do not notice that the head is always slightly tilted to the side of the leading hemisphere of the brain, and when the other hemisphere of the brain becomes dominant, the head changes the side tilt from right to left or vice versa. I noticed this when I invented a method for determining which hemisphere of the brain belongs to almost any opposite of any aspect, any field of science or aspect. I already know dozens of opposing differences that allow me to see how all types of sciences are connected by the fact that everywhere there is something that relates to the hemispheres of the brain.
I can tell you a lot of new things that will allow you to win a Nobel Prize and become very useful.

I'm happy to change my mind about something if you have some solid evidence, or a better way of interpreting the existing evidence, but if all you have is logic and argument, then what makes your point of view any better than anyone else's?

One of the truly great minds of our time. I am going right now sit down and start re-reading From Bacteria To Bach And Back.

at 3:22 - I wonder if he was referencing his disagreements with S.J. Gould?
I don’t think I truly had an understanding of biology until I read “Darwin’s Dangerous Idea.” A brilliant “intuition pump” on every page.

Ridiculous sophistry! What can they be conscious of without life?

It's time for avengers to re-assemble with someone taking Chris' seat. Horsemen unite! Have any of Sean Carol, Max Tegmark or Laurence Krauss, join Dennet, Harris and Dawkins need to get to some important conversations. Making truth in social media and news a priority, the harm religion does, the way to actually reach theists to rescue them from their indoctrinations.

Daniel Dennett looks exactly like I'd expect him to, if that makes sense.
