making a Rock in Blender

Showing how to approach rock creation for games in Blender. Texture created in Substance Painter.

Sorry for the meandering nature of the video. It could be 10 minutes long with some editing - long gaps without talking - Sorry ;p. Also, the Decimate modifier is not meant for a production art - I was just using it to save some time. If you are doing this for real please take the time to retopologize this properly!

If you guys have any requests please let me know. My style might be a bit out of date, but I'll help out if I can.

The sculpting part was amazing. (Which is really all I needed because i only make high poly 3D printables.)
The substance painter part is too much idle tweaking while you appear to forget you have the recording still running. At this point I'm totally lost, and have no idea what you're doing. But, you're not click baiting it as a tutorial, so that's fair. You're obviously very good at what you're doing. Still earned a like. :)
EDIT:
Ok so now that I've tried this sculpting technique, I can attest that it's really awesome. And for everyone else out there who are using Blender 2.92, it's worth noting that some of the features have moved around. The "Original Normal" option is no longer in the Scrape brush Options tab. The checkbox can be found in the Advanced tab, and has changed format to title "Use original", and then you have the checkboxes "Normal" or "Plane". It's all important that you find this and set it correctly.

I also found that my mesh needed a bit finer Dyntopo resolution, so I set mine to 4 instead of 6.

Further more, I noticed that my brush still wasn't behaving as in the video. It either kept "digging" into the object instead of creating nice layered planes, or it kept adding instead of continuing the normal at my stroke starting point. This because I was moving the brush too fast across the survace, and although I don't have any lag whatsoever, Blender just couldn't keep up. This guy moves his brush with lightning quick strokes, but my Blender (or computer or w/e) responded differently, and yours might too. So as soon as I moved the strokes just a little bit slower, the brush was doing the trick.

This is the very first rock I've made, so initially it looked kinda contrived, instead of natural. Using reference pics of rocks and cliff faces helped a lot.
In less than 20 mins, I had something that was pretty great for a first time. Hope this helps others.

Bruh that's so goddamn cool and overpowered! I've watched so many guides but this one little adjusting to a scrap brush is insane! It's completely blowed my mind bro, this shapes you get with this brush looks so natural 😳 omg no need to mask, to switch with other brushes, to download bunch of other brushes etc... one little setting if a standard brush 😮 thank you, man!!!

I am currently using version 3.1. If you want the same sculpting effect as the video, check both 'Normal' and 'Plane' in Tool - Brush Settings - Advanced - Use Original.
Thank you so much for the great tutorial video.

This is a really great tutorial, I learned a ton about modeling and uv mapping — thanks !

You can do everything in blender, also this kind of texturing.

Did you forget for the last third of the video that you are recording a tutorial?

Maybe there is some tricks to make s detailed trees in sculpt mode? Would be appreciated! Your vids are so helpful 🥺🙏

Best advice I heard about rocks, don't make them into potatoes (seriously)

wow, this really helped. *deletes all her potatoes rocks blender saves*
I'm really hoping you will upload more vids in the future!

Do you have to create a low poly version to be able to UV unwrap it? Even if creating a procedural texture in Blender, not substance painter?

Where did you get the rock face material from?

The video titled "Making a Rock in Blender" is a tutorial by WeightedNormal on how to create a realistic rock model for games using Blender and Substance Painter. Here are the key points:

The presenter starts with an icosphere in Blender and uses the bisect tool to cut away parts of the sphere to create a rock-like shape. He emphasizes the importance of creating a shape with a lot of facets to avoid the rock looking like a potato.
He then moves into sculpting mode and uses DynaTopo for dynamic topology. He uses the scrape brush with a sharp fall-off and original normal settings to create detailed facets on the rock.
The presenter introduces the clay brush to add surface detail to the rock. He then uses the scrape brush again to refine the details.
He duplicates the high-poly rock model and uses the decimate modifier to create a low-poly version of the rock. He then creates UV seams and unwraps the model to prepare it for texturing.
The model is then exported as an FBX file and imported into Substance Painter, where the presenter bakes mesh maps using the high-poly model.
The presenter briefly discusses the possibility of using a remesh modifier in Blender to smooth out the rock model, but decides against it, preferring the more faceted look.
The presenter concludes the video by suggesting that a few different rock models can be created and then duplicated, scaled, and positioned in a game environment to create a realistic rocky landscape.
The video is a practical guide for 3D artists looking to create realistic rock models for games using Blender and Substance Painter.
