Pre Drive Checklist - What to Expect Before Your Behind the Wheel Exam

Before you even begin your behind-the-wheel test, your examiner will ask you to locate and/or demonstrate the following vehicle and driver safety items. If you are not able to locate and/or demonstrate the operation of 4 or more items, your driving test will be counted as “unsatisfactory” (failure).

Pre-Drive Checklist:

1. Driver's window: The window on the driver's side must be down. If it is not down, you will be asked to roll it down.
2. Turn Signals: You will be asked to turn on left and right signals.
3. Horn: It should be working fine and can be heard from a distance of at least 200 feet.
4. Brake light: Both brake lights must be operational.
5. Foot brake: You will be asked to press the foot brake so that they can check if its working or not.
6. Windshield: You must correctly locate the windshield wiper switch and/or control wipers.
7. Defroster: You must correctly locate the front windshield defroster button.
8. Emergency Flasher: You must correctly locate the emergency flasher switch/button
9. Headlights: You must correctly locate the headlight switch.
10. Emergency Brake: You must be able to locate and demonstrate how to use the parking brake (set and release).
11. Arm Signals: You must correctly demonstrate arm signals for:
Left turn.
Right turn.
Slowing down or stopping.

The examiner will also look for any damages that may cause hindrance in driving so it's better to get your vehicle properly checked before you go for a driving test.
