Regardless if you are familiar with, a fan (or not) of Opera as a genre, you can still appreciate the natural talent & dedication of this legendary tenor to become one of the best the world has ever seen. This was recorded back in 1994 when Luciano was 59 years old. How many modern day pop stars half his age can belt out notes like he did? Sadly, very few these days. This was back before auto tune & done in one take, in front of a live audience consisting of over 50k people. This is just an aria (solo part) of the opera "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini, written in 1924 & first performed in 1926.

The world lost a tremendous talent when Luciano passed away in 2007. I'm glad that my 2nd favorite tenor, Andrea Bocelli, is still alive & singing his heart out... Andrea has had a very successful career crossing over from classical opera to more modern pop songs. He has done duets with Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, Celine Dion, among many others. He is currently the world's #1 tenor to crossover into other genres of music.

Classical opera is considered to be the most difficult genre to learn, many try but fail. Luciano dedicated his life to his art & that is why he is called il maestro (the master). He was once quoted saying that his vocal cords were kissed by God. Yeah, no truer words were ever spoken. His body is a whole cathedral of angelic sounds. I saw a comment once that was so spot on "Hearing your first opera with Pavarotti singing is like taking your first car ride in a Rolls Royce."

When I was a kid I didn't like opera much because to my immature & unsophisticated ears, it all just seemed like a bunch of yelling done in singsong form & I couldn't understand the words. It wasn't until I was in my late teens/early 20's when I began to fully appreciate what it took to become a trained opera singer. You don't have to understand the lyrics in order to feel the raw passion behind the music & performance. Beautiful music & incredible natural talent transcends all languages & ages.🙂

Nessun Dorma - "No one is sleeping" Google " and read the libretto (Story), at least get a quick read of the storyline. Google "Turando"/ Then read a translation of this Aria. It, like most Italian arias, it is full of emotion and passion. Without knowing the lyrics, you can't fully appreciate the Aria.

Music has no colour. We listen as if the same ear. I like all types of music from Opera to Afghanistan folk music. And finally, you are a delightful soul.

Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
Tu pure, o Principessa
Nella tua fredda stanza
Guardi le stelle che tremano
D'amore e di speranza!
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me
Il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
Quando la luce splenderà!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà
Il silenzio che ti fa mia!
(ll nome suo nessun saprà
E noi dovrem, ahimè! Morir! Morir!) coro
Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle!
Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò!
Vincerò! Vincerò!

The translation

Let no one sleep,
Let no one sleep!
Even you, oh Princess,
In your cold room,
Watch the stars,
That tremble with love
And with hope.
But my mistery is hidden within me,
My name no one shall know,
No... no...
On your mouth, I will tell it,
When the light will shine.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die, die.) chorus
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win!
I will win!
I will win!

What you might like to know is that this song is actually the first one of the third act of a significant opera, 'Turandot'. If you want to get the whole picture of what this song means to the story told in that opera there are YouTube clips of the entire opera available. Not Pavarotti's performance, but good ones nonetheless.
Puccini set the story of a tyrant princess in ancient China and her impossible requirements for selecting he whom she could marry, and the hero of our story is a nameless prince of some far off land also not disclosed, who in the end wins the day and gets the hand of the princess.
