City of Mikkeli, Suomi Finland, as seen from air.

Mikkeli is a small city of eastern Finland, in Etelä-Savo region. It was an important place during the wars in 1940-1944, hosting headquarters of Finnish war effort (first defensive, then offensive) against Soviet Union. Thus this city is sometimes called "Päämajakaupunki", i.e. "Headquarters City". It was obviously bombed pretty bad by the Soviets back then.

Mikkeli has also some natural beauty. Effects of last Ice Age, ending 12,000 years ago, can be seen clearly in Mikkeli region; terrain is pretty rugged with nice rock formations and stuff.

Virtually all of the area was still deep under water just mere 9000 years ago, as the sea level in eastern Finland was back then approx. 100 meters higher than currently. This is why Mikkeli's semi-official slogan is "Living at sea floor with dry clothes".
