I had a crash course in learning to listen like this through a 4-month hospitalization. Asking people to tell me THEIR stories was the best distraction. I learned how very noble and heroic every single human being is. It’s not a bad thing to learn. It’s been life changing.

This is a great reminder that active listening is one of the best skills one can practice.👂🏻

I deeply appreciate people who can do this. Most people miss that listening simply means staying silent and nodding once in a while, and then reply with zero understanding of what you just said, often only pushing their own viewpoint on top of you. I call that pretend listening. Real listeners *explore* your world, mixing in questions to clarify what you really mean by reiterating what you said in their own words to confirm that they attempted to understand. This is how wrong assumptions are corrected. Real listeners are really rare from where I am.

That's why I'm still head over heals for this guy who gave me some attention this past year. He's let me talk about my experience and thereby showed me that I was more important that I believed I was. He's not a therapist, I didn't pay him. But he listened to me, and gave me his time. He has my gratitude and my love.

Listening attentively will also make people love you. It's practiced so rarely that it feels special.

I LOVE how when talking to people Jordan Peterson will periodically look someone from the group in their eyes… That might not seem like a big but that seemingly small gesture shows how much Dr. Peterson cares, and doesn’t see them as just a random group of people there to listen to him talk, he sees each one of them feel important and special as individuals

Isaiah 54
"The sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue to know the Word that sustains the weary.
Morning by morning, He Awakens my ears to listen like one being taught."

I'd love to. Currently cleaning my room. Once I've got that done, and have the means, I'll enrole.

Bro this is me now since 2020. My first time hearing of you.

I could never explain this to someone and they wouldn't believe me if i ever did explain it.

I grew up with many self destructive ppl (my opinion), I learned what not to do by listening and watching. I excelled more than my other family and friends bc of it. I was quiet up to 30 years of my life. I benefited from it.

It is so real. I struggle to communicate to my father, his usual 1st reply is "I don't need to hear anything you say!", he is actually proud of this because he always he never wrong. It is actually painful.

Intently listening is how all good detectives have garnered confessions from psychopaths listening and showing interest is a very powerful tool.

It’s also one of the most difficult things I’ve found to do is actually pay attention and be fully engaged in genuine dialogue.

I started trying it when I read Martin Buber’s book I and Thou, and it was one of the most challenging yet rewarding things I’ve ever done.
