It can't be because:

1) The burglars were suprised about Kevin being in home.

2) I'm 100% sure that they aren't capable of killing anyone.

And when Kevin finds out that his dad tried to kill him, something inside of him snapped and he turned into Jigsaw from Saw franchise.

In the scene where everything was spilled on the table, one of the uncles accidentally threw away Kevin’s ticket. You can see his name on it when it pans to the inside of the trashcan. The reason they didn’t know Kevin was gone is because there was an odd number of people so they both thought they were in the van with less people.

One theory is that uncle frank, kevin's uncle, was jealous of his brother's money and luxurious house and he hired 2 burglars so they can rob Kevin and uncle could enjoy his rich life .

Also Kevin’s Dad left the garage door open, so I think the robbery theory is pretty good. It’s just that he didn’t expect to leave Kevin behind

The wet bandits actually weren’t hired, I can prove it. So in the beginning of the movie, when they were counting the people, the neighbor who was a kid about Kevin’s age got counted by the one who counted. This was because they couldn’t see his face. And later in the movie, the wet bandits robbed old man Marleys house and left the sink on. The dad had-or wanted nothing to do with old man Marley, and he didn’t want to kill him. So this proved the theory wrong.
