People gathered in a village in Fayyum, 110 kilometres south of Cairo, on Tuesday, for the funeral of an Egyptian border guard killed in a shootout with Israeli forces at the Rafah crossing.
Egypt's military announced the death on Monday, adding that a probe had been launched. Israel said it is discussing the incident with Egypt.
The soldier has been identified online and verified by MEE as 22-year-old Abdallah Ramadan, though the military has yet to confirm his identity.
A second Egyptian soldier also died after being wounded in an exchange of fire with Israeli troops near the Rafah crossing with Egypt's Sinai on Monday, local sources familiar with the matter told Middle East Eye.
