Ag in the Classroom gearing up for Canadian agriculture literacy month
Показать описание
Agriculture in the Classroom works to give kids an opportunity to learn about food production. An annual part of that goal is agriculture literacy month, celebrated each March.
Chandra Gusikoski, communications coordinator for Agriculture in the Classroom, spoke at the Ag Awareness Summit last week at Saskatoon. RealAg's Atley Hamlin asked Gusikoski about agriculture literacy month project and how others could get involved.
Part of the drive involves agriculture industry members heading directly into the classroom to connect with students. Gusikoski says that the goal of this program is to give students a chance to build personal connections with agriculture. She says this gives students the opportunity to learn where their food comes from and ask questions directly from people in the industry.
Agriculture literacy month is a coast-to-coast project with provincial members under the national Ag in the Classroom organization. Anyone in agriculture, from industry professionals to producers themselves, can volunteer in this program. Gusikoski says volunteers are provided with training, support, and an activity package to work on with the kids. Volunteers get to go into the classroom and be the face of agriculture in their communities. Gusikoski says that this experience is meaningful to volunteers and that students are so excited to learn from and meet someone working in agriculture.
Gusikoski also highlights a program Ag in the Classroom did in partnership with Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan called Meals to the Farm. This program targeted schools with higher incidence of food insecurity and brought students and farmers together to eat a meal produced in Saskatchewan. Gusikoski says this gave the opportunity to connect the farmers directly to the food students were eating.
