Also both brothers resembled their mother, I think, but it’s hard to see because Julia smiles and Caracalla scowls, plus Julia is wearing the wiggiest wig that ever wigged. That or her hairdresser spent hours sewing her hair into place.

I really love these reconstructions that make historical figures look like people you’d meet on the street; it humanizes them from marble statues.


I wish there was a statue or some way of reconstructing the appearance of Julia Domna’s even more formidable older sister, Julia Maesa, grandmother of two emperors she personally put on the throne. Her only image is on coins. She makes for fascinating reading - she was something of an imperial Roman Tywin Lannister, only with absolutely 0 compunctions about that pesky Kinslaying thing. (When grandson Elagabalus proved to be a royal screwup, she had the Praetorian guard kill him. AND his mother, her own daughter. They wound up tossed in a sewer and Maesa’s more Tommen-like grandson, Alexander, became the new emperor.)

What a tragic life for this family. They had great wealth, fame, and power, but what good is any of that if you can't enjoy the life experience? Just as we witness in the modern age, it's all about control, power, and greed no matter who's in charge. Modern governments have the same agendas and it never ends until you find and elect leadership who understands human compassion and love over everything else. These are very unique and special leaders, and I don't know who they were. I'm sure they were rare. The only one who comes to mind in my lifetime was President Ronald Reagan (US). He was a man of the people and was admired by many.
