Enjoying the book, many thanks. As a point of interest, the Ratel that you mention in the maritime museum is named after the Afrikaans name for a honey badger because of it's toughness and ability to go virtually anywhere. Pronounced with a long "a" . Being a 75 yr old South African I have many relatives who spent many hours in the safety of the Ratel's sometimes very warm embrace.

2 questions...
1. Am I right in thinking Sam had a brother when he was young, who died? Was the brother still alive when Sam was 13, on the island? If so, I am left wondering where the brother was at that time?
2 I have read that some Petra buildings have a layer of wood low down, between the stone layers on those not carved out of rock, but built of rock. During the Christchurch (NZ) earthquakes, it was suggested the wood layer at Petra may have been to protect the stones above from damage during earth tremors. I was hoping you might have touched on that. Perhaps it did not feature in your extensive research?
