This was so funny to me to watch as a Roman Catholic. I live in Tuscany and have visited st Catherine. We pray and have a festival for her because she helped the poor and ignored people of here. Her thumb is considered incorruptible and it still is completely normal looking you can see the fingerprint. There have been wars fought for such relics. But sometimes my church parades relics into the village for people who can’t make it to church. The odor of sanctity smells like Lilly of the valley which is crazy. We had a recent saint from Spain that had the smell.

Here’s the answer-

On October 13th, 1383, Raymond of Capua, Catherine's confessor and biographer, knowing how much it would have pleased her fellow citizens, if she had been buried in the city of her birth, decided that at least part of her should return home. And so he removed her head and dispatched it to Siena.

So it wasn’t the Pope!
