How to: Aquarium Heater Setup & Use

Learning how to use an aquarium heater is very simple. When finding your heater size, you will want 5 watts of power per 1 gallon of aquarium water. There is a huge selection of different aquarium heater types. First, mount your heater next to the flow source in your fish tank. The flow helps the heater work more efficiently. You can mount your heater up and down or side to side. Second, plug in your heater and set it to the temperature you desire.

Never allow your aquarium heater to be on out of the aquarium water or it will burn up. When your doing water changes unplug your fish tank heater. Most freshwater aquariums are kept at the general tropical temperature of 78-81 degrees Fahrenheit. Tropical fish need to be kept at this temperature range or they will get sick.

EHeim make brilliant aquarium equipment. That German engineering is great. They are more expensive, but if you want something well engineered, that will outlast the cheaper ones and be accurate then you won't do better.
All heaters have that minimum submersion point, but remember even in water, heat rises. The heater will more efficiently and evenly heat the tank if you have it lower in the water. Some would say mount them horizontally instead of vertically, but I think that may be personal preference. Somewhere water flow is present, without being too aggressive, is good. near a pump return is good (suction point). The pump outlet may not be the best place as the water flow can sometimes be too aggressive. You don't want the heater touching the substrate, that will end badly, but you want it submersed a fair way so it can evenly heat the water.
This was a great video with some really good advice on heaters. These days you can get a lot of different types of heaters, but the most common is still the glass tube, and they really are not that attractive to look at.

Anyone… so it is safe to fully submerge the heater including the dial at the top? If it malfunctions will it electrocute my fish and/or me if I touch the water? Thanks!

Great explanation, I just couldn't see how much of the heater was submerged under the water. I can see the minimum water level line on mind. How far under the water is your thermostat switch??

I would never install it vertical cause the heat goes straight up and turns the heater on and off too quickly best at either completely horizontal or at an angle

How do I get my water to cool down? I don’t have A/C in my home, so the water is consistently at 80 degrees. I don’t have any fish in it right now since I’m filtering the tank, but I plan on getting gouramis and guppies. I have a pre-set 50W 78 degree heater in a 20gallon, and it won’t turn on to regulate the water temp. I’m worried my fish will die from overheating once I put them in, what can I do??

Can you and Joe would you add a heater while fish are in aquarium. Will the heater slowly heat up to acclimate the fish? Or will it just heat up too fast and kill the fish

So if heat rises and your thermostat is at the top of the heater, wouldn’t the thermostat read hotter since the heat is rising up instead of being evenly distributed like it would be if placed horizontally? I don’t like false readings, like when people use the glass sticker heat readers thinking it’s reading the water temp and not the glass wall itself.
