Murder, rape of trainee doctor ignites 24-hour health care strike across India

More than one million medical workers in India took to the streets on Saturday as part of a 24-hour strike, ignited by the anger over the rape and murder of a female doctor last week at a medical college in Kolkata.

The 31-year-old victim was a trainee doctor, and according to her father, went missing for at least seven hours without query from other staff.

“My daughter is gone, but millions of sons and daughters are now with me,” the victim’s father told reporters.

Protests have erupted across the country since the tragic incident. Demonstrators are calling for the better protection of women in the country, and one lawyer – who worked on a similar case in 2002 – says widespread judicial changes are needed in order to combat sexual assault in India.

“Each such crime should become a landmark signalling to the society: do not commit such crimes,” Shobha Gupta said. “When we want a system of law to play a role of deterrence, punishment to play a role of deterrence, it should come faster. The punishment should be the harshest possible.”

The brutality of the attack is much worse than cases reported in the past - it is as the lady said it is only getting worse. The Indian govt, judiciary and police are to blame for this. So many brutal rape cases have been reported in the past yet, no concrete steps have been taken to reduce the occurrence of such crimes. The system and society hasve to change.

This is absolutely horrific, however, similar things have happened in India and nothing has ever happened, no laws have been changed or enforced.
This is primarily due to the fact that women do not have equal rights, they are disregarded and held at the same level as a dog . This may be hard to swallow for some people, but look at the facts of domestic violence even here in Canada in that community. My sister is a nurse and sees the domestic violence in the Indian community firsthand, it’s way above any other community

How many Indian men did Canada take in last year? If they treat their own women like this, what can western women expect?

As brutal as this is, I'm proud of the Indian doctors taking drastic steps to seek justice for their sister. It is a shame it had to be this way...but hopefully in the future no other doctor or worker male or female is treated this way

This is a cultural problem that has been going on for many many years. The Indian people need to look in the mirror and hold their friends, family and peers accountable. Teach your sons right and wrong. Teach your sons to respect women.

There was an article I read about 8 years ago stating around 38, 000 women are raped in India and thats not including unreported cases.

38, 000 is incomprehensible.

i feel bad for India, they try to be modern and have a rule of law but fail, due to barbaric people in their country who have no concept of treating women with respect and accepting rejection that a woman can say "no, i am not interested."😞👎
