You could see the cat carefully assessing, planning and calculating the jump before executing the maneuver, and it all went perfectly to plan. Cats are amazing!

Everybody is amazed by the jump but I’m amazed that the cat knew that jumping out the window was logically its best chance at survival. I just find it so astounding that that animal was able to think that way, and weigh the odds. Very clever indeed.

I was taught in high school that for a falling cat, falling from higher up actually helps them survive the impact in situations like this. If the cat has enough time during the fall to stretch out and form a little parachute, this'll lower its terminal velocity to such a degree that as long as it lands on all four feet, it'll survive.

This is a very difficult jump. This building is at 6527 S Lowe Ave. Below, between the concrete wall and the road there is a patch of grass. The grass strip is approximately 6'5'' feet wide. And when you look from above, this width is even smaller due to the inclination of the flight path. He flew literally a foot from death.

Over a year ago my cat fell from the fourth floor while sleeping on the window. We thought he was dead but he survived with minor injuries.

It squirrel dived. Back legs held out long as it transitioned its self to fly over the wall and hit the landing spot. So it knows grass softer than concrete. Smart BEAST
