Imu is definitely the most mysterious character in One Piece.
In the beginning i alway’s thought that maybe Blackbeard or Akainu were going to be the main villain’s, but now im pretty sure that it’s going to be Imu, considering thag he’s above The Five Elder’s and he’s probably 800 year’s old, id say that he’s perfect as the main villain for Luffy.
I just hope that his character design will be great cause i will be really pissed off if the main villain turn’s out to be a joke, cause if he really is above everyone, he’s gotta to be really srong and intelligent and he’s probably very manipulitive and pure evil.

My theory is that Imu is the God/Devil of the sea itself. Notice how “Imu” is Umi spelled backwards and Umi means “Sea” In Japanese. I think Joyboy and Imu fought 800 years ago, Joyboy lost but with the help with the “One Piece” he separated Imu’s power into many small fractions (Devil Fruits) and if anyone eats them is punished by Imu (Cursed by the sea)

It would explain why Imu’s identity is kept secret. He/she/it lost most of its power and can’t get it back until the one piece is found



P:S I just found more evidence that supports my theory. There’s a Japanese folklore monster called “UMIbozu”. A literal sea devil. They resemble the giant red eyed creatures that appeared at thriller bark (towards the very end of the arc). Judging by their shape and their eyes, they look like a giant form of Imu (btw in Norse Mythology there’s a god of giants named “Im”). And to put the cherry on top Shanks joked with Luffy that devil fruits were created by the “devils of the sea”


Imu could also be the Mother of Nature. Everything I just said ^ but in recent one piece chapters Dr. Vegapunk literally said himself that devil fruits are disliked by “the sea, the MOTHER OF NATURE” Imu is shown handling butterflies with care surrounded by a garden. Plus is shown to have feminine hands. Plus one of the very first ost of One Piece is called Mother Sea

Just a theory of mine (no evidence really):
What if 800 years ago Joyboy and Imu were enemies? They fought until Joyboy lost which made him break his promise with the mermaid princess and had to apologise on the poneglyph. He realised he had no options since he couldn’t stop Imu’s rise to power but to be sent to the future with his army. This could be done through Toko’s df. Hence he left behind the Noah and told the fishmen to protect it so him and his army can use it upon return in the future. Imu lived because of immortality potentially gained from the Ope ope no mi.

Another theory which clashes with that one is what if Joyboy created df to give people a fighting chance against the ancient weapons if they were to ever come back

What if Imu was the one who decided to delete 100 years from history. What if Imu is the reason why Zunesha has been walking for so long.
