I had a similar thing with Collin McRae. My cousin (still very much alive) came to visit me from Poland. He made me install this game since he really likes the sport. Anyway he kicked my ass every single fucking time we played. He often played when I was at work so he pretty much set all the records.
Anyway he went back to Poland and we sort of lost contact after a short while. I played the game again after maybe 2 years and there was this one map that I really liked and thought I was good at. I followed his ghost as best as I could, tried to find any mistakes that he could have made and just really tried my hardest to beat him.
It took quite a few tries but I finally beat him. I regret not recording it (Back then I didn't even think there was an option of doing that) but I did end up sending him a screenshot of my name above his. We started talking again, we actually had at least one quick conversation every week for quite some time. As life happened we lost touch again but within a few months he sent me a screenshot of him beating my best time. We spoke again and returned to our normal conversations.
Right now I'm practicing on Dirt 3 because I know he is coming back here next summer. I will buy him the game and send him a controller soon. I want to be his ghost when he comes here and tries his best to beat me.
