1:12 " A million shells were fired." This is actually a massive understatement. The germans launched about two million shells in their opening bombardment, the entire battle over the course of 10 months estimates between 40 and 60 million shells. Just puts the hellish experience into perspective.

Name me a more apocalyptic battle than Verdun. You can't. The town and fields were just destroyed. It's been more than a century, and parts of the battlefield are still off limits thanks to unexploded ordnance, gas shells that never burst, and arsenic levels a thousand times the normal levels. Verdun was so hellish, it destroyed the land it was fought on for generations yet to come.
Think about that for a bit.

Little did they know that this battle would not last a day, not a week, not even a month or two. They could never have known they would be fighting the longest, bloodiest battle in history.
