A WET and WINDY WINTER DARTMOOR WILD CAMP (Vango Banshee and DD Hamock Superlight Tarp) this week, as the boys hunker down at Dartmoor's bleak house and batter down the hatches as 40 - 50MPH winds approach. Summit or Nothing Hiking on Dartmoor series takes a turn for the worst as the pair decide to brave the elements for a night of wild camping in the middle of winter, during a storm. Now how else would you want to see the new year in?

Will Nath's DD Hammock Superlight tarp hold up on its maiden pitch, will Trev's Vango Banshee 200 sustain the turmulous weather on the untamed Dartmoor? There's only one way to find out?

That age old question, why do we camp out. We drive for hours, sometimes days to the park, the real start of a camping trip. We have a funny feeling in our gut, a feeling of foreboding. We question ourselves. Yet we set out anyway. We head of into uncertain weather and conditions. We put extra weight on our backs. We slog up and down muddy trails.

We pitch small tents, sleep in the dirt. Only a thin layer of nylon and foam separating us from mud and worms. We eat half rehydrated, half cold slop from a bag.

Despite fourteen hours of darkness, we sleep fitfully, mere hours. We get out of our tents, often in the rain and dark to answer nature's call. In the morning we kneel in the mud, hunched over a tipsy stove for a brew and to break our fast.

Then we pack up our kit, often soggy. Sling it over our back and head off for the next campsite or maybe back to our transport home. Glad to be done, headed home.

Once home, we clean up, feed ourselves, sleep the sleep of the just.

Mere days later, we're pulling the maps out, dreaming of our next adventure.

Great stuff lads, ''proper weather'' up there lol. I have a Banshee 200 and a 300 but have never been out in bad weather in them yet so was very interested in how the 200 stood up to the weather. The time spent in a tent during winter is a test in itself, awaiting the outcome with Stu.

Good effort lads - I love the sound of rain on tent/tarp, often helps to send me off to sleep but the wind is something different.

Other week I was in Tenby. In a big tent (Vango 550sc). Winds were 48mph. Rain and wind for 15 hours straight. As I constantly looked at the weather could see it was getting worse. On a cliff face overlooking the sea. Had no idea if tent would hold up. Other tents blew down... But it did. I can relate to this video. I felt so trapped inside. How your video was at 9 in your video. It was like that for 15 hours. Vangos their tension straps are pretty good. I was impressed.

The pitch Nate is using with his DD is the same I use when I use my tarp. I have had it out in 50 mph wind, thunder storm actually, and it held up, of course it was on a bit more solid ground and under the trees.
I use an old water bottle as a piss bottle when I camp so I don't have to leave the tent.
Quite the cliff hanger guys. Hope we see a part two. Curious to see if Nate received bunny visits.

That was superb again boys, you’ve gotta love the sound of rain on the tent, long time in the tent in the winter months but I’m ok with that, looking forward to the grand finale, TFS, ATB.

Ooo got me all nostalgical, Bleak House was my first camp up Dartmoor! I found a little grassy flat bit about 100m downstream from the ruin on t'other bank. I did a tarp pitch like Nate's, no rain though :-) Awesome as always boys, look forward to your next post!

Bloody awesome...I felt your pain! Long nights with nothing to do other than worry about whether or not your temporary home will survive the night are no fun (even if you're reading the adverts in Playboy by bunnies seeking new homes) . As for the nighttime "call of nature", use an old plastic bottle rather than a ziplok bag but use a permanent marker pen to write a big "P" on the side...otherwise you might risk, in the confused state of morning, thinking it's a bottle of lucozade! If push comes to shove you can also use it as a hot water bottle if it's very cold. And if the neck of the bottle is too small, use an old wide mouth Nalgene bottle instead! Keep on camping.
