For a software developer, ChatGPT is like a hydraulic lift for a mechanic.

Hey really appreciate your work and glad I’m a member of your no nonsense website. Tech gets hit and then it ripples through but they are also first to rebound. Yeah did you notice right after FTX really hit and Crypto had lost major face, here comes Chat GPT. We need our hype. The Futurist quoted Bank of America as saying AI was the modern day equivalent of Electricity. Thats ridiculous IMO.

Welcome back dude! Not expecting regular uploads if you're not feeling it of course, but glad to see you drop by

Great to hear from you again Chris. I agree it is a tool and there are many tools but if you don't understand what you are coding it has limited value. Coding is all about building projects and I learned in a similar fashion.

Yay ur back. I totally understand the life balance for u. YouTube is a side thing and burden or u. I know it’s a grind. Thx for hopping on w updates and comments.
Programming is awesome and applies to every industry. I was able to convince my daughter (20) to at least take some programming classes and she did. she likes it. so she’s doing a little bit more. Sometimes (many) the kids don’t want to do what dad does. But now two of the four are doing some of what I’m doing and I didn’t push them into it. I just said it’s a good idea because it makes you, much more flexible and hireable.
Thx for the video

I'm pretty sure I'll have my job for about 5 years, and I'm software dev 😊
No worries I have some land, and I will use GPT or AI to program cheap robot to grow me a food. You should get out of city and start buying land before it gets crazy!

This was a good video... all these other videos try to give people anxiety about Chatgpt and layoffs.

Hi Chris...great to hear from you again! I don't know what to make of this market in terms of product knowledge...but this story is as old as the hills. Corporate America jumps on a bandwagon, overhires because the overhead can be supported and when economies of scale go south they cut costs...personnel costs being the most expensive.
I think it's time for software to exist in and of itself and let Corporate America become vendors and not employers. Hisotrically that's the way many professions ended up surviving.
Thanks

I think ChatGPT will definitely turn more of us into entrepreneurs who own our own code. Software already isn't a normal job. Almost all software dev is creative project based where the company takes all the rights to your work while your reward for success is either another project or layoff. There will also be an even more backlash in open source wherw the best programmers refuse to give away their work to AI. So ChatGPT will be training on insecure crappy code. So seniors will just have more non greenfield messes to clean up.

There is no end in sight for me for the utility of tech to improve processes. As labor increases in value, the benefits of automation plus the speed of deployment that assisted software development brings will keep engineering safe. And even if its not, critical thinking skills are always useful. That said, the glory days are probably behind us. I could easily see tech salaries stalling for a while.

I find with ChatGPT it does not understand how Code Works together. Hell it does not understand at all its a LLM. Its great for basic parts but for detailed stuff like OOP it can really create some dumb stuff.

You can give it a very detailed prompt and it will get closer to being correct but at that point you could just write the code yourself. If you understand programming but dont know the language too well ChatGPT def helps a lot.

I don't think it will decrease demand for software engineers, but it will make it easier and thus reduce salaries. In 10yr you will work for a salary of skilled tradesman or a fast food worker.

Hi Chris. I agree with you that the tech sector has slowed down. The difference between 2000 and 2010 technology-wise is significantly bigger than from 2010 to 2020. We went from large computers to internet at our fingerprints 24/7. Since then there's progress, but it's not as steep of a slope as before.

Do you remember the progression of iPhone up until the 6th model or so? Siri was on the news and people were lining up outside of Apple stores overnight. Now every time a new product comes out it seems like barely an improvement over the previous one. I'm impressed by technology like VR and AI, but rate of development has slowed down significantly.

So much of the layoffs are big tech correcting itself after it’s over inflation during Covid. I think ChatGPT accounts for a marginal amount of the current variance.

I dont think it will replace people but tbh i think its gonna be a huge cut of people being hired

I mean, I think AI is not 100% hype. The innovation is real--so much so the Data Analyst role is back in popularity. AI is going to need a lot more data, modeled and structured accurately.

got laid off from Google. It sucks, and the current tech market is trash, but we can get through it. I’ll say that the layoffs and chatgpt seem to be pretty detached from each other though; if anything, the short-term consequence of chatgpt is probably going to be a massive increase in investment into AI startups, and prob a net positive in tech jobs.

I think the AI hype is real this time though. It’s been overblown in the past, but chatgpt really does seem to be at the minimum an iphone moment (and at maximum suggests that AGI timelines are way closer than most people thought).

As of now ChatGPT can be used as initial tasks. However I imagine it’ll do incredible things. I’ve heard that someone is working on automated comment generator. Maybe even be the lead on no code development. All I know is that ChatGPT is way more than a dev tool.

This is all going to fizz out because companies are still too lazy to document their processes. You can't take advantage of automation without having business processes in place. I have been building workflows for a decade and not only do you have to contend with lack of processes but you also have to deal with user adoption. The business world is still not ready which is quite sad.

It’s ironic software has been automating jobs for decades and soon the software programmers will be automated. Karma I guess.
