White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)

Highly susceptible to infection by SARS-CoV-2

Multiple reports of widespread spillover from humans to free-living deer

SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529 Omicron variant

Staten Island, New York, December 12th 2021 to January 31st 2022

White-tailed deer opportunistically sampled on Staten

19 of the 131 (14.5%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2

P.C.R. testing, n = 68 deer

Seven actively infected at the time of sampling

Specific serum antibodies indicating prior exposure
(? Omicron or previous)

Whole-genome sequencing identified Omicron (n = 4)

Circulating amongst the white-tailed deer on Staten Island

Phylogenetic Omicron sequences clustered closely with sequences recovered from infected humans in New York

Human to deer spillover

Urgent need for comprehensive surveillance of susceptible animal species,

to identify ecological transmission networks

and better assess the potential risks of spillback to humans

Virus may be evolving to adapt to the new host

Infected with earlier variants

Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia

(Deer have appeared asymptomatic when infected with earlier variants)

I appreciate the compassion you show, not just for your fellow humans, but for all the life sharing this planet.

I'm glad you mentioned animal husbandry & the horrific ways in which animals are treated. That needs to change. It should never have happened in the first place.

Yes, we too are disappointed in the lack of concern about animals. Thank you for voicing your thoughts on this subject.

Dr John, thank you for shining a light on the awful way we treat animals as a whole. More people need to become aware of these issues, especially in the medical field. I’m a veterinary professional so these issues are close to my heart. I appreciate the fact that you even mention the plight of animals with regard to medicine. 🙏🏼🦌

Agreed, the treatment of animals was and remains appaling and unacceptable.
Humans don't learn compassion well, also true, John

I can't remember the last time I sat down over a Pint with a deer. The way we treat the animals that share our world says a lot about our society. We need more work in this area. Thank you for your continued effort to inform the lay person.

Thank you for emphasizing the conditions that food animals are kept in - unsafe for us, cruel for them.

Thank-you so much for talking about the animal connection. I really don't understand how everybody managed to ignore the connection at the beginning, and continues to ignore it. Humans need to change, and change quickly. I'm happily amazed by the high number of people on side in the comments here. :)

Thank you John, I couldn't agree more with your comments about intensive animal farming, poor animal welfare, and the increased risk of zoonosis. When will we learn?

Hi John, I live in Perth Western Australia, the thing you are missing about WA and why they are delaying omicron as much as possible is because our hospital system is in a shambles. Even without omicron it is a major struggle to get decent turn around for normal hospital emergency situations that require a bed, there are no spare beds, and a massive jump in omicron admissions will severely impact the hospitals ability to handle patients.

This is reflective of many many years of mismanagement and defunding of our entire hospital and aged care sector. Our government is trying to hide the failure of their governance over a long period of time.

Always a million thanks to your kind and deep diligence, John. The Zoological cross contamination is so scary.... BTW, you need recognition from the Queen.
