TIP. Much better than plain beeswax is what Guardsmen used in the 'old days'
Black HEELBALL WAX, also known as COBBLERS WAX.
This is beeswax dyed with soot, so you're melting colour as well as wax into the leather.

Still available in sticks or blocks (Etsy etc) as of 2023.
