Foreign cars have risen in price by 40%
The growth in prices for passenger cars in 2022 reached a record level for the entire time of keeping statistics by Rosstat. The previous one was set in 2021, when the cost of cars increased by 14.48% in a year during the pandemic. Another peak was observed in 2015, when, following the weakening of the ruble, car prices rose by 12.49%.

Most of all, at the end of 2022, new cars of foreign brands, both imported and manufactured in Russia, went up in price by 39.11%. At the same time, new passenger cars of domestic brands, and these are mainly Lada and UAZ (at the end of 2022, domestic brands Moskvich and Evolute appeared in Russia), went up by 29.65%. Used foreign cars helped to correct the overall figure - their cost increased by only 6.75%.

Car prices outpacing inflation
The increase in the cost of passenger cars significantly exceeded the general level of inflation. According to the same Rosstat, the overall price index for goods and services (CPI) in the country increased by 11.94% in 2022.

The peak of growth in car prices came in March 2022, when deliveries of new foreign cars stopped, and Russian car factories began to freeze production due to a shortage of components. In the following months, the cost of cars was slightly adjusted, and used foreign cars fell by 8% compared to spring by December.

The Avtostat agency gives the following indicators for each car model. In this case, it is worth considering a slightly different calculation method. Rosstat looks at the price tags of cars that were sold in car dealerships during the reporting period, without taking into account sales to legal entities. In turn, "AUTOSTAT", speaking of the top 10, leads to a change in the recommended retail prices for cars in basic configurations.
