I moved to Portugal from the UK in 2002, initially just a temporary destination, in search of adventures and a better way of life. From the first day I arrived in my village, I fell in love with this place. I have been treated with nothing but kindness and respect. In the last 22 years, this 'immigrant' has never once been made to feel unwelcome. Not everyone who arrives is suited to life here. You have to change, adapt and thrive, things I have always been happy to do. I am devoted to my Portuguese friends, my neighbours and 'a minha terra adotiva'. I will never live anywhere else.

You can’t forget this huge detail about Salazar and Portugal.
Portugal and Britain hold the oldest European alliance (and if I’m not mistaken, the oldest in the world).
During ww1, Portuguese soldiers fought alongside the Allies, undertaking huge losses to defend their old allied country.

In ww2, Salazar managed to stay neutral, without breaking the alliance with the UK and the US, and without enraging the Germans (remember Spain had Franco and they are our neighbors).

Portugal stoped trade with all these countries, in order to avoid choosing sides and avoiding the loss of thousands of Portuguese lives.

As an immigrant and now residencia I cannot understand the derogatory comments by Portuguese nationals in this thread. Portugal is not perfect but is far less imperfect than anywhere else I have lived. We have been made most welcome, love the variety of food and try to contribute to the local quality of life (and economics). Our only regret is that the Algarve region is now becoming over developed and losing it's charm.

On 27 January 1416 the Dubrovnik Republic abolished slave trading and became one of the first in Europe to do so… The decision to abolish slave trading was found in Dubrovnik's old statutes. Slavery was a legally recognised system in which people were legally considered the property or chattel of another.😄

Something that was missed about the earthquake event in lisbon, what killed most of the people back then was not the earthquake or tsunami it was fire, back then people used candles to provide light and heat to homes, so as a by product of the earthquake that hit the town since most house had candles the candles fell and caused fires. So just imagine a trifecta of earth shaking + fire + tsunami ... what killed a lot of people was sudden fire that brust due to the candles.

Portugal e pais muito famosa e maravilhosa, adoro muito! ❤
But! Salazar has made very much good for his county that's why many people gratefully remember him.
In comparison with real european dictators such as Stalin, Hitler etc he was very peaceful preventing participation in world war II, prohibiting capital punishment. He was univercity professor as his friends ministers and he could revive economy after chaos of revolution.

As a Portuguese citizen, thank you for this beautiful video. The general feeling of the Portuguese people is not so great, since political and economic problems are still very present and a lot to be improved still. But once again, thank you very much for honouring Portugal. Although I was born in Luxembourg, which I love very much, I love Portugal too.
