Jessie is just about flirty enough to make all of us melt for her. Not overly desperate, but clearly a woman who tells him what she wants and she's trying hard to show it. How attractive is that enthusiasm, guys!

It's refreshing to see a female character who is open about her feelings instead of the same shrinking violet we typically see in JRPG's. If I looked like Ms. Raspberry, I certainly would have been a flirt at her age. I love men. I love seeing them shy. I love when they cross past shy and take over. She knows he's putting on airs, so she's fighting his glacial indifference with her tomboyish warmth. I'm sure once she started to see his figurative armor crack, she would have become more sincere. Because jeez, how many character do we need to fit the expected nadeshiko ideal? Jessie is smart, inventive, and plagued with this world's equivalent of privileged guilt. She owns up to her mistakes.

It's so great to see a lady who has some domestic traits without being fettered by them. Even Tifa, for all of her combative strength, boils down to a personality that is largely maternal and dependent on male leadership. She doesn't believe in her cause enough. I have the feeling she's always just been handed what she wanted, and this caused both a kind of benign callousness that devolved into a crippling lack of confidence once she left the bosom of her home town. Consider: she is always reliant on a man. Her father, her trainer, Barrett, then Cloud. I love how people call her a "strong" character because she can fight. I'm not saying she's a *bad* character or wrong to feel that way, but she is not a strong personality. She's been improved greatly in the Remake because some of her clinginer attitudes have been softened and she has a little more personal stake and agenda. I actually like new Tifa, which frankly shocked me.

Aerith is a bit of a middle ground. One thing one could never fault her on, though, is her conviction. She goes openly to her death. She's the only of the two original girls who is honest enough to explain she's done letting her past (Zack) get in the way of her present during the famous date cutscene. She wants to get to know Cloud. The *real* Cloud, the one she knows is nothing like Zack nor the man she first met. She and Jessie are similar in that way, that they use their unbounded positive energy to whittle down Cloud's protective shell.

Honestly, though, I feel Jessie is normal and that would be best for Cloud. There is no baggage there on either side. He could protect her, which plays into his instincts and ambitions, but she could offer support in the form of technical know-how. She just needs a little training to shore up her skills as a warrior. And she would always, always shower him in affection. I don't think that's ever bad for a man.

I'm so happy that this masterpiece 1997 RPG has been given the remake treatment. Has to be the greatest franchise to me - that being the Final Fantasy VII universe.
