For the first time last year we tried a slightly different method of growing in buckets. Instead of drilling holes in the bottom we drilled holes on the side about 3 inches from the bottom. Before adding our soil mixture we put in a thick layer of seaweed. When water pooled at the bottom the seaweed became liquid fertilizer. We had the best tomato, eggplant and peppers ever.

Hi Brian
I downsized from 20 gallon containers to 5 gallon buckets last year and saw no reduction in production. Last year I did celebrity, bush early girl, cherry and Roma in 5 gallon.

You introduced me to a tomato variety called Arkansas Traveler, saying that it was bred in the Ozark Mountains. As I live in the Ozark Mountains, I ordered some straightaway and started them. I planted 4 seeds just 10 days ago, so they're still young but doing very well so far in my greenhouse. I also have 2 Better Boys sprouted and a Beefsteak that I had planted before I watched your video and learned that Beefsteak may not be so happy in my area, but I'm so excited to finally -- for the first time ever -- have a successful tomato harvest by following your tips and tricks. Thank you so much!

Wonderful information. I am growing Roma tomatoes in a 7 gal grow pot. The 7 gal pots were cheaper than the 5 gal, so I figured it wont make a difference. As I've commented before this is my first year growing a garden and I'm in Phoenix AZ where it's warm/hot pretty much all season long.

We grew sweetheart of the patio last summer in a grow bag. It was productive! We’re going to be growing it again this year if our nursery has one.

I have a very small back yard, so I use grow bags for my tomato plants. This year I am growing only dwarf tomatoes, 6 varieties. I don't like growing vine tomatoes, because they get too tall. I recently learned that indeterminate vine tomato plants can be topped off to keep it at a selected height, and new shoots will form to make the plant bushier and produce more tomatoes. My sister said her husband tops off indeterminate vine tomatoes, and they do very well. Going to try this next year.

I grow Orange Hat in relatively small pots about 10 inches wide at the top. So cute and very productive open pollinated.

We had a horrible season last year here in S Central TX but the one tomato that did well was my Large Red Cherry that I had in a 7 gallon pot. It was over the top of my 10’ trellis and still producing (small amounts) even through the hot weather.

Just planted 23 of the 43 tomatoes I’m doing this year with about 1/3 in pots.

Orange Hat! They can be grown in a 6 in pot and are wonderful little pops of tomato flavor. They are quite productive as well. I am growing one in my IDOO right now as well along with a MicroTom.

I've grown Glacier (determinate, 55 days) in a raised bed, liked the flavor, will try it in a large pot this year. I grew Bush Early Girl (determinate, 54 days), in a 5 gallon pot, had a large number of medium sized tomatoes, very good tasting. One winter I grew Orange Pixie Hybrid (determinate, 52 days, 18" tall) indoors in my greenhouse window in a one gallon pot, small tomatoes, very delicious; it grew more than the 18" that was advertised, very leggy indoors, perhaps not the best way to grow it, but the small tomatoes were really tasty. I've also grown Moskvich (determinate, 60 days) in 2 gallon bag, though I think larger would be better, good tasting small tomatoes, always the first seedlings to pop up, the easiest to take cuttings from to propagate for plants later in the summer. I had a similar experience to Brian's growing Sungold (indeterminate, 57 days) in 5 gallon pot, very sweet orange cherry; I picked my last tomatoes in December including green ones which I ripened inside; and both the ripe and ripened green tomatoes were still, very, very sweet and delicious.

Thank you. I did grow Garden's Delight a cherry tomato in the house in a pot. That was mad and it was so much fun and we have to tie up to the wall. Another woman who was from Iran, grew her Roma tomato behind the television. The vine spread, the tomatoes were so juicy and according to her daughter she had the tomato for years.

I am mainly a container gardener. I have a buried petroleum pipe under the rear of my backyard, and I dont want to take chances. I grow at least 4 varieties each year, 5 this year. I have found that earthbuckets do the best for bigger tomatoes like beefsteak and brandywines. The nice thing about earthbuckets is they are cheap to make and take a lot of the guesswork out of watering The next best is a 7 gallon grow bag. No matter what container use you, you will likely be using some kind of potting mix. Make sure to add garden lime for calcium as most potting mixes dont have enough to prevent blossom end rot.

Been waching on Youtube Tv for a few years, but you can't comment on it so logged in on my computer. Watching you plant your tomatoes video. Just wanted to say you have been a great help to me. When you are ready to plant if you water you plants in the cups 20 minutes before you start. Then when you are ready you just turn the cup upside down a give a slight pull on the stem, and out they come. Water them from the top just a little to moisten the soil. Don't water heavy it will make a mess.

My fave tomatoes for 5 gal pots (outdoors): Sun Gold (or Sun Sugar), and Supersweet 100. Both are fairly disease resistant and heavy yeilders, and taste great, and ive been growing them for years.

This year im trying a few alternates, all selected for fusillium resistance:

I grow almost all my tomatoes in earth boxes. they do really well in them, much more productive than in the ground. supporting them is the hard part but i have some wire frames that fit in the boxes and it mostly works...

My Sun gold did well in a pot, but I noticed the fruit on my in ground plant was significantly larger and sweeter. Thanks for the info and some new variety ideas!
