One time I was at a pet store, just petting a rabbit, and someone asked me if I worked there. I was only 13 at the time lol

I'm a really anxious person and my default start to ask an employee questions is "excuse me" but that often leads to people thinking their in my way. "Do you work here?" is a way of me being able to start a conversation with an employee without immediately apologizing or making it awkward for all parties involved

As an autistic, I can understand how someone with interpersonal challenges could use a phrase like that as their standard social "ice breaker" at a store because it hypothetically should scale well across retail experiences. Generic "hey, can you help me" to the wrong person can feel really awkward and throw them/us off our pre-rehearsed script.

I was a gardener in an inner city park, and I don't know how many times I'd get asked 'excuse me are you a gardener' the funniest time was when a colleague and I were covered in mud, shovel in one hand plant in the other about to place it in the ground when we were ask, all I could think was 'really? What else does it take to identify my job right now'

It is not a real question. It's rethorical. It's just a way to start a conversation in a polite way, if a person is not comfortable asking what they want, or maybe they are not even sure what it is they need, just want some advice. That's my take on it.

It’s just a unconscious thing I think. Similar to how when someone at the movies tells you to enjoy and you say “you too” it’s just a automatic response that your brain has ready.

I feel like ppl instinctively ask "do you work here?" In place of "can you help me?" Or "where is (x)?" outta fear of being rude or something
