In this video we will discuss whether a Data Science or Computer Science degree is the best choice for your data science career!

Well, both D-S and C-S are fantastic choices for a concentration, so please don’t feel discouraged if you’ve already chosen one over the other.
That being said, we here at 365 have conducted research to determine which one is better for a successful career as a data scientist.

We’ll begin by weighing the pros and cons of earning either degree, starting with D-S. Then, we’ll do some evaluation and head-to-head comparison before picking a winner.

The most obvious pro of getting a Data Science degree is that it’s supposedly the shortest route to becoming a data scientist.
Having the words “Data Science” next to “education” in your resume is a sure-fire way to get the express treatment when applying for jobs in the field. Thus, the signalling aspect of such a degree is extremely important.

Of course, the main reason is that potential employers believe you have a great interest in the job. They don’t have to worry about programming skills, analytical understanding of statistical results, or your data-storytelling abilities. This is crucial because some great statisticians lack the coding pedigree, while some programming wonderkids lack the knowledge to extract insights from a dataset. With a Data Science degree, you’re sure to possess all the necessary qualities, without needing outside validation, like extra certification.
However, currently, there is 1 major con when it comes to a Data Science degree – availability.

Since the field is relatively new, a Data Science program can sometimes be hard to come by, regardless of whether we’re talking undergraduate or graduate programs. The scarcity has resulted in many students having to pick alternative concentrations and, as a result, losing interest in the field prior to graduating...

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science jobs are the fastest growing and some of the best paid ones for this and the coming up years.

Yeah… Data Science is a mixture of so many disciplines like math, statistics, economics, programming. Probably the best way to go in your country if there are no universities to offer a degree in data science, is to study a mixture of disciplines that will help you land a job in the data science field.

I agree that a computer science degree also shows to potential employers your interest in a future data science degree. Obviously, not so many universities globally offer degrees in data science at the moment.

However, the future is in machine learning and artificial intelligence, and data. So I am all-in for getting a degree in Data Science.

Computer Science gives you the fundamentals to step on and to become a data scientist, so I do believe that a Computer Science degree is better at least for the moment.

It’s amazing to learn that a computer scientist can easily transition into a data architect or data engineer job with the skillset they already have.

After watching your channel for some time now(over 6 months), I am considering giving your courses a shot. You always post very useful information about the field.

I cannot agree more with you on your point that statisticians lack the coding pedigree.

You are very right to say that “self-created” data science could be a good choice for undergrads because it is a mixture of various disciplines.

I am a front-end developer and I start seeing that more of the people I work with are moving towards data science. I may consider to do the same…

Data Science degrees will become a new standard for universities to offer. Currently, only few universities offer undergraduate or graduate degrees in Data Science.

I'll share my experience, im a civil engineer with a MBA, i realized that i was so interested in finance, entrepeneurship, business and thing like this, then, i read about data science and i loved it. But nobody told me that i had to learn how to code, im learning python in the IBM Data Science certification, it has been so interesting: basics, python with SQL, data analysis, data visualization, machine learning (regression, classification and clustering), this week im starting my final project. But i feel, that there is a big world that is being more dificult that i tought, i feel like i need a lot of "help" (copy paste) to accomplish my assigns.

Math, statistics, business, analytical sights is a peace of cake, each one with his/her own effort and fight.

If you are looking to work in the data science field, a degree in data science over a computer science degree gives you a huge advantage.

There's also a great difference between being a data scientist developing generic software to one that actually works on a specific problem (like credit risk). It seems that many data scientists are employed in the latter but dream to be in the former.

I will definitely look to get some certification in Data Science because I am a full-stack developer and I am eager to get into the Data Science field.

DS is definitely growing. My MS is Business Analytics and we have the same curriculum as data science (I really don't know why they call is Business Analytics instead of DS). We go through Python, R, SAS, Tableau, and Power BI. Also, a lot of STATS. With that being said we go through a lot of ML & DL methods. I don't remember if we are in the top 200 colleges. What I do know the avg salary for last year graduates was around 85k, and 90% of the graduates had a job within the first 6 months.

i recently just got accepted to go the THEE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY and im trying to decide on going for an CS degree or a degree in data analytics. IM leaning more toward the data degree because its newer and i can practice writing code in my own time i feel like the CS degree will mostly benefit the programming side of things.

I don't think a degree in data science will prevent you from other career options in the future. Statistics and programming skills are useful anyway and they are transferable to other domains as well. Take economics as an example, how many graduates ended up being an economist? It is even less relevant to data science unless you concentrate on econometrics. Also, many economics students do not have exposure to programming as they only use statistical packages such as SPSS or Eviews for their coursework.
