How can you use a d6 for more than just fireball damage?

I had a flash of inspiration the other day. Use 2d6 for random encounter. If it’s doubles, then there is a random encounter. The higher the pair of numbers rolled, the harder the encounter. Snake eyes would, ironically be a beneficial encounter because I like that the world isn’t completely out to kill the party.

I used a d6 as a timer for a ritual. 5 cultists were trying to raise a demon in a summoning circle. At a 20 on initiative i rolled a d6, and if i rolled equal to or under the amount of cultists still alive/concentrating the ritual succeeded. Gave the party a neat incentive to target creatures that werent directly attacking them

I eat them. Terrible habit I know. Trying to quit. Taking it one day at a time.

"uses for d6: 1) damage. 2)....other, more damage"

Last time I ran a House Ruled 2e game, we use the D6 for hearing. Something heard on a 1-2. More definite on the 1, of course.

I use them for loot tables, Enemies tables, and random encounters. I usually dont need more then 6 and it gives a sense of never knowing what is coming. You found a dead body and search it. Great roll a 1d6 and you find ....

Curiously, I've convinced one of my two groups to use d6 initiative for all initiative. BG3 uses a d4 behind the scenes, and it really lets high initiative characters consistently act first. I cannot tell you how many times my Gloomstalker with a solid plus six has gone dead last because of a low d20 initiative.

Otherwise, I vastly prefer 3d6 core rolls with degrees of success (e.g. 5 over or under the target) over the d20 with flat pass/fail results.

Japanese systems like it.
I use it for initiative since we are running AD&D 1st ed. It just works.

I use the d6 for random encounter starting distance. (How many full moves for an average character does it take to close the distance between where the side that won initiative first becomes aware of the other side).

The d4 can do a lot more than a d4 of damage
