In response to the terrorist attacks of #september11, American and coalition forces commenced combat operations in Afghanistan on October 7.

On this episode, former #f14tomcat RIO "Tung" Peterson describes what it was like being on deployment when 9/11 happened and flying in the first strike to begin the military response. A member of VF-213 flying from the USS Carl Vinson, Tung describes aerial refueling challenges that almost turned his first mission into a disaster (but was saved by a daring USAF tanker crew); enthusiasm among the ship’s crew to avenge the attacks; and dealing with the MANPAD threat.

Holly smoke, what an episode! Really great to hear those stories from Tung. The F-14 D must have been a real beast at that time. Makes it even harder to not have the big fighter anymore. Thanks for keeping the legend and legacy alive. Keep it up!

I've watched every episode, and they've been great. This is the most amazing thing I've ever heard. As a retired E2-C Hawkeye maintainer, I arrived at Miramar in 1988 and would drive past Hangars 1 through 5 on my way to Hangar 6. I was always in awe of the Tomcat and jealous of it's maintainer. I deployed with CAG-11 and we had the Aardvarks and Black Lions on my first deployment . I would always make sure to walk under and touch them on FOD walkdown on the ship. I was on the Roosevelt during the first strikes during OEF. You have done an amazing job with the Tomcast, and I love everything about the F14 (best jet ever).

I tried to go on that cruise. I was in VF-101 and routed a request to cancel shore duty to deploy with VF-213. To put it mildly 101's MO denied that chit. I also feel it deep down in the cockles of my heart, when you guy remember to mention us (the maintainers) I appreciate it, thank you. Seeing the jets leave the pointy end and knowing that I did my small part made it worth it. Another great episode!
