Project Summary:
The aim of the project is to develop a prototype model of a robotic arm, also called a functional unit, fixed on a moveable platform. The right-hand glove is designed as a control unit consisting of flex sensors, a wireless module, and a programmable controller. The robotic arm can perform multiple tasks such as grasping objects, lifting and placing small items carefully from one place to another similar to the human hand. To simulate the complete human arm, several joints, and motors are used along with a clutch head to grab the objects. To control the movements of joints and motors, flex sensors are used. A Flex sensor is a sensor that measures the amount of deflection. The value of deflection is directly proportional to the amount of bend. One flex sensor is used for each finger on the glove. The value of the sensor resistance changes once the finger bends. The change in resistance is converted to an instruction that is transmitted using a wireless transmitter to the functional unit. The functional unit (robotic arm) performs the relative task once the receiver gets the instruction, it performs. Thus, a person can control the movements of the robotic arm through finger movements. Although it is a prototype project, it has broad application domains. To control off-sight movements, a camera module is also attached at the clutch heading. The camera provides live streaming that can be broadcasted on Android devices or laptops directly. An ultrasonic sensor is attached at the front of the moving vehicle to detect and avoid obstacles for off-sight grabbing and placement of the objects. The proposed project has several advantages. It is an environmentally friendly device that can work in tedious environmental conditions such as chemical and toxic environments. It is very easy to understand and control. Moreover, from prototype design, fully mechanical arms can be designed that can also be controlled through similar controllers.
