From Season 3 Episode 20, 'The Longest Day'. The same story repeats three times, from different perspectives. Joey (Katie Holmes) and Pacey (Joshua Jackson) work out how to tell Dawson (James Van Der Beek) about their feelings for each other. Dawson's reaction is not what they'd hoped for.

About Dawson' Creek:
Confronting issues of mortality, infidelity, homosexuality and betrayal, DAWSON'S CREEK presents the poignant stories of teenagers growing up in a rapidly changing world as it follows the relationships of a tight-knit group of friends in a small Massachusetts town to college in Boston and beyond.

This was one of the shows that taught me the difference between a "Nice Guy" and a Good Man.

Say what you want about the show but this is some damn fine acting. That young cast sold the hell out of those story lines and are what made the show so watchable for all those years.

I think the problem was that dawson always thought he was better than pacey. He had an idea that pacey was his charity work. Remember his birthday when he was drunk and started telling he missed pacey being the screw up só he could look better. Dawson was very toxic and thought the world revolved around him
Just this clip he telling pacey he didn't have anybody with, thinking he was the one who called the shots with his friends

Pacey was the emotionally mature, understanding and patient one. Dawson was selfish, insecure and an emotional wreck. Said what I said.

Dawson acted like they'd cheated...he was so weirdly possessive of Joey. I never sensed any romantic chemistry between them, compared to Joey and Pacey.

I didn't realize how emotionally manipulative he was. He always thought he was better than Pacey or that Joey couldn't do better in life than him so she always be grateful for any attention he gave her. He loved being the center of thier universe more than he actually loved them or thier friendship.

For people saying it was ok for Dawson to react that way: he trapped Joey like she was a doll he could control. Held their life long friendship and the only constant family she's ever known ( since both her parents are gone)over her head and tried to force her to get back with him. Remember he pretended to organise the prom for Jack but really it was to manipulate Joey. He nearly killed Pacey in a boat race. He only put the blame on Pacey, acting like Joey was a toy he stole. Gave Joey no free will . Then in the end he says he's going to "free her" and she should "leave before I change my mind"! Like wtf how cruel and toxic can you be. I hate that he controls her and gives her no free will. No women should ever be with a man like that. I understand he could been sad, upset, angry all that but if the women you love has to break down crying in your arms for you to decide to let her be happy, you never loved her at all.

Dawson's reaction makes us adore Pacey more.

why does he genuinely think the world revolves around him and he’s so much better than everyone else

Dawson was being ridiculous he’s actually one of the worst characters on the show in my opinion. He didn’t treat Joey right and he was possessive of her

What's so funny is Dawson didn't want Joey 😂😂😂 he just didn't want nobody else to have her💀

Show should have been called Joey’s creek or Pacey’s creek....definitely not Dawson’s creek

Dawson just wants Joey when he can’t have her, he likes the Hunt a lot more.

One of the overlooked details of season 3 that adds to its greatness is that American Eagle provided all the outfits for the main cast. It's one of the only seasons of a teen drama ever where the cast all dressed exactly like real people their age. My friends and I all had the same clothes the cast wore.

The acting in the last scene was phenomenal

The way Pacey grieves the loss of Joey in the following episodes is what grips me, emotionally speaking. He sinks into a depression that is incredibly relatable.

This clip is one example of how both Dawson and Joey always tried to force romantic love into their friendship and it backfires every time. It’s Dawson’s turn here to behave as he owns Joey and he holds their friendship hostage. In the second season Joey breaks things off with Dawson to find herself because they were so young and being in a relationship with her best friend she’d known for so long was suffocating. Pacey and Joey falling for each other in season three was the perfect example of how love works. It just happened and they couldn’t get rid of it.

Something that I really love is that Joey and Pacey isn't something that just comes out of nowhere, like a gimmick for a fun plot in the show. When it happens, it feels like it was always meant to be. My favorite callback moment is in that episode early on, when they have to go looking for snails. When you first watch it, you don't make much of it because you're rooting for Dawson to finally notice Joey, but on every rewatch it's one of my favorites from the early seasons.
