1984 Audi Sport Quattro: The Racer’s Daily

André Lotterer was born in a motorsport family. His father had a racing team in Belgium that has been one of the very first ones to play around with Audi rally cars. That was a long-wheelbase Quattro. A wonderful if slightly oblong mix of five cylinders sending power to all four wheels. André loved the sound especially.

It was an entryway into motorsport, and soon André began racing karts. It turns out he wasn’t all that bad. In fact he was good enough to drive on the winning team three times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He earned those wins with Audi, completing a pretty impressive circle that began with seeing the rally cars his dad worked with many years ago. To make it an even more comprehensive story, he now calls this souped-up Sport Quattro his daily driver. Not your typical transportation, but then again this is Monaco we’re talking about.

I was lucky enough to see one inperson in Winnetka Illinois at their monthly cars and coffee, a dark green one too! It was parked next to a Hurrican and I said it out loud "why is everyone looking at the Lambo when THIS is sitting right here infront of you!"

Fantastic. Great to see this Audi vehicle. It is so true what he says about the vehicle. You’re amazed because of the look and you’re amazed because of the strong historic racing heritage that the vehicle carries.
The 5 cylinder sound, the Quattro and race heritage of this vehicle has set the tone for what we have come to know today in the RS3 sedan and the Quattro suspension in the other Audi models. To see someone this young and so passionate about a vehicle like this is fantastic . It also means he is quite sophisticated and that he uses it as a daily driver! Wow!

Being a German sports car fan but always having leaned more towards Porsche and BMW, I can say this is one of the few Audi's that really excited me. I love all rally racing but like most people I obsessed over Group B so that's where my interest in Audi Quattro's started. In my 20’s I once drove one of these cars once for 15 minutes on the way back from getting breakfast. and yes, it was a Sport quattro proper. I’ll likely never experience a moment that electric ever again.
