Having some trouble getting my head around that down down, up, up, down, up rhythm.

Find it much easier to go DOWN, down DOWN, up, DOWN, up

And it sounds the same (to me)

Is that a fine alternative or should I try and drum in the other (correct) rhythm.

When I learnt guitar for the first time my teacher taught me to use fingers 2, 3 and 4 for a G chord, which makes changing from G to C a piece of cake. Of course that's a 3 finger G.

I use the 3 pinky end fingers on the G..my two fingers are near the E/ A already for the C..I find some songs it works better..like 'stand my ground' g to c fast hop.. in full G pinky is used anyway....I'm just learning and need to learn G both ways but that's what I find..

Another trick to make switching between C and G easier is to play G with your middle, ring, and pinky fingers instead of pointer, middle, and ring fingers. That way you can just move your middle finger to the D string second fret, ring finger to A string 3rd fret, and put your pointer finger on B string 1st fret.
