What are your thoughts on game industry drama and are there game devs/publishers you don't like? EA and Activision have big targets on their back but does that matter to you?

A lot of these answers are: Don't ask questions, just consume product and then get excited for next product

The abuses against workers, sexual assaults & harassment & racism should matter. Companies that are straight up stealing from consumers. Games not finished. Just watched a lot of people say they don’t. Bless the couple who touched on it, and pointed out to check out more indies. But no, game companies aren’t our friends.

We should always care when we hear about workers being abused by the companies they work for.

I'm on the same page as Lon. I've spend far more in supporting indie titles than AAA games these past few years.

It really disappoints me how it seems that many of those interviewed in this video don't care about the people and abuse behind the games. They simply don't care as long as they get their game. The industry is still new enough that we, as the consumers, can change it. Having this attitude toward the industry is hurting our chance at changing things for the better and making game development actually humane.

I don't know if the question was poorly worded or if I'm misinterpreting answers but it's sounding like not a single person in this video is even remotely worried about news of predatory publisher behavior or the rampant abuse of workers.

I love that you and SpawnWaveMedia are collabing now. Its cool seeing two of my favorite creators working together.

I have been known to boycott game companies that do something I find despicable. I don't get dramatic about it, I just wash my hands of them and walk away.

Wow, Gaming off the Grid's response feels downright malicious considering the innumerous reports of crunch, sexism and many other forms of abuse that have been reported in the last 3 or 4 years. Literally just "we don't give a fuck if people are being destroyed to make these products so long as we get to consume them and think it's good".

A good game does not excuse Ubisoft from years of ignoring the abuse of it's employees.

I think my pet peeve isn’t drama but endless speculation. Like if I hear anymore about the Switch Pro I am going to scream

When it comes to drama the thing that bothers me most can be developer abuse behind the scenes. Things like the ubisoft scandals or crazy crunch hours. Now that's not to say it stops me from buying and playing a game (I am weak) but maybe one day I wont be. Things like the lies from no man sky devs or fallout76 or Cyberpunk matter a lot less to me than the scary stories behind the scenes. We definitely get a bit too wrapped up in the games sometimes and forget about the people who make them. So yeah that drama really matters and gets the word out.

We should clarify between useless drama and actual problems that pass on from game to gsme. If a company ruins ruins plot/gameplay consistency to follow a trend and or add lootboxes then I will be cautious with my purchase (especially if bugs are present from a big company name). This is why I'm just collecting old games that were straight to the point fun with no downloads or restrictive ownership issues.

Did the Gebs really just say that she likes to think that EA have learned their lesson with micro transactions??? Must be nice living in her own little world. What a naive perspective of someone in their late 30s. I understand you don't want to see how the sausage is made but don't pretend abuse, discrimination and preditory micro transactions aren't a thing just so you can play the games you like. Really suprised at her perspective, and disappointed.

I strongly dislike limited run games and their business practices

We need more Kelsey, Reggie and Kinsey.

mobile gaming was the worst thing to happen to gaming, everything is modeled after it now, all microtransactions, and "seasonal" models for releases and content, it allows for games to be released incomplete

I find it a cop out when people say they avoid drama when it relates to unethical behaviour. We have a role to influence better behaviour. But when it's something trivial, yeah, it's immature and a waste of time.

We certainly DO hear from the devs in the trenches when we get those insider pieces from Jason Schreier. It's usually pretty heartbreaking stories too.
