For those who do not know the sport, he is a great diver, but he just had his knees buckled, which is actually very common. He probably knew as soon as he left the board that he had messed up, but in diving, if you messed up your approach and you still try to do the dive, you still have chances to win points as long as you land in the correct place with correct body rotations. If you messed up your approach and do not even try to do the dive, you are definitely failing the dive. It is really admirable to know that he had messed up but still tried to do it!

You will always remember Zakharov, if not his name, then his performance.

You could see it from the start. His feet slip off the board and he couldn’t get the height or rotation to finish it.

The commentators at this year's FINA worlds were saying that Zakharov had the yips at this competition-- a complete mental block. I hadn't heard of divers having the yips before, but it makes some sense.

I am glad this video got posted because I am tired of watching biographies of athletes of when they were poor and achieved their dream of being in the olympics for an hour and seeing one measely previously recorded competition when they win the gold. I WANT TO SEE THE AGONY OF DEFEAT, the real LIVE drama of competition, the many OTHER sports that happen in the olympics.

How cruel to post this and the next video of the Malaysian diver's failed dive. As if it weren't already embarrassing enough to live through it once when it was happening, now it's on youtube in perpetuity for the world to laugh at their failure. Heartless!
