Bob Dylan - It Ain't Me, Babe [Live in Newport 1964 RARE]

There's a fascinating story to this track: Have you seen that footage of Bob Dylan playing "Mr. Tambourine Man" in 1964 at the Newport Folk Festival? It's on Dylan's official channel and has about thirty million views. Anyways, I'd always wondered why at 0:35 he was playing a G chord with the capo on the first fret, and suddenly at 0:48 he has his capo on the third fret and is playing a D chord getting ready for Tambourine Man. Apparently, Dylan played two songs in that set. This track was the first one. So, the beginning (up to 0:45) of that famed footage from Newport was actually in preparation to the recording you hear in this upload. Enjoy this gem while you can!

That's one of my favorite quotes about Dylan "ran away from home 17 times and got brought back 16." Knew about that quote for a long time before this video, but thanks anyway for reminding me.

Poor Pete Seeger thought he could contain this talent. A whole generation was cheering Dylan on. What a legend!

I had no idea he performed two songs that afternoon. I had always assumed he just popped in to show off his new song Mr. Tambourine Man, I guess I was wrong. Thanks for uploading!

Great hearing this. I was 10 years old and lived 2 blocks from St Michael's School where this afternoon workshop took place, I'll never forget his playing It Ain't Me Babe as his first song and then Mr. Tamborine Man. It made an immediate and profound effect on me. I was also there for his 1965 "goes electric" performance which has proven to be a timeless and amazing performance!

Go 'way from my window,
Leave at your own chosen speed.
I'm not the one you want, babe,
I'm not the one you need.
You say you're lookin' for someone
Never weak but always strong,
To protect you an' defend you
Whether you are right or wrong,
Someone to open each and every door,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.
Go lightly from the ledge, babe,
Go lightly on the ground.
I'm not the one you want, babe,
I will only let you down.
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who will promise never to part,
Someone to close his eyes for you,
Someone to close his heart,
Someone who will die for you an' more,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.
Go melt back into the night, babe,
Everything inside is made of stone.
There's nothing in here moving
An' anyway I'm not alone.
You say you're looking for someone
Who'll pick you up each time you fall,
To gather flowers constantly
An' to come each time you call,
A lover for your life an' nothing more,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

I also did not know that, and it makes the event even more significant: this was the "topical song writer workshop", where topical songwriters were supposed to be showcasing their topical songs. Dylan came out and did "It ain't me babe", i.e. he is not Pete Seeger's or anyone else's topical songwriter, then Mr Tambourine Man, the most anti-topical; song you can think of.

Loved Dylan from 60's to 90's He had a style & voice that just grabbed at your soul. I suppose the drugs, cigarettes & booze caught up to him by the turn of the century, but it sounds like he was just mumbling the songs, which was a shame for those of us who wanted our kids & grandkids to experience him At least we have the old records & videos to remember his best days

He was born betwix a switchblade and an armadillo, in 1793, and his mother would know best, but he stomping's hear, and chomping at the bit, bless him

Dylan sings this song with the edge the lyrics call for. The Turtles covered it, but their smooth version doesn't do justice to the lyrics filled with hurt.
