The whole issue begins with the tactics of religion to make it your identity. That’s is their first crime, done at children’s cribs.

Yep, but facts don’t care about feelings.

Sam Harris is a secular Jew and Daniel Dennett has never, to my knowledge, belonged to any religion. With that said, yes, New Atheism is a response to Christianity that strawmans other religions out of ignorance

The link between religion and culture isn’t isn’t a deep concept. Why would Dawkins have difficulty with this?

Trying to not offend people is a meaningless exercise for people who have nothing better to do.

I understand what he’s saying, and he does have a point, but I feel like he’s making a deeper point than he realises; wedding one’s ‘beliefs’ to one’s identity is not necessarily healthy. One can have core values such as ‘I want to be true to myself’ or ‘I want to search for the truth’ that are applicable in any situation and can remain through personal evolution, but once one says ‘I am a person who believes in x’, one stands at a crossroads, two divergent paths of ‘my identity’ and ‘my beliefs’. This kind of dichotomous way of being can be incredibly damaging.

'Will always...' is that a permission or a promise?

it's not meant as an attack on a religious people's identity. it is an attack on subjective realities caused by religion.

its funny how the people in the comments not understanding or dismissing the point are proving it

Old atheism:
God is imaginary but we can't hurt theists feelings

New atheism:
God is imaginary. DEAL WITH IT 😮

Yes. They *feel* that. An authoritarian father may feel insulted also, when you explain him, why his beliefs are outdated, destructive and not the best at all. But that does not mean, he has a right to stop you from telling you that.

‘feels’like an attack on their identity because it is an attack. I don’t know the context but is David basically saying if you’re of a persecuted religious minority you’ll likely be more touchy about a diss than if you are not persecuted ? So basically you’ll be less rational and likely emotive ?

Religion is also cultural so it has associations with your identity even after you become an atheist. The atheist defends their culture but not religion and they might be honest if they think one religious group is better than the other. Even though an atheist doesn't believe in God, religious practices are open to analysis by outsiders just like any other institution.

When I want religio-racial politics analysed I won't be going to a second-rate comedian. Is Baddiel a Jew, you wouldn't know to look at him, I always thought he was English.

Is it not exactly the identity portion which many athiests see as a problem? And the fact that the belief that structures personality and cultures is a false and pernicious one is why we're keenly aware of the relationship.

Ive never known the four horseman ro celebrate or not acknowledge belief persecution, they just think the beliefs are deeply flawed and deeply harmful and say as much
