This is one of my favorite Brian Wilson songs, and Vince Gill's performance was stunning. I've watched it many, many times.

😊 Vince Gill just crushed it – borrowed it from the angels that night.

The Beach Boys did do "Surf's Up" live in the early 70's, when Brian wasn't touring with them.

"surf's up" is new to me . I'm in a Beatles obsession and so obviously I know that Paul McCartney loves Pet Sounds and also "surf's up" was the favorite song of Bob Welch (my favorite guitar/singer Fleetwood Mac ever had)😊

Great interview. I don't know how anybody can sing Surf's Up, but Vince did a great job on it in the concert. Brian and his band performed it live for awhile after he finished and released the completed Smile album.

Somewhere online is a recording of this of Carl singing with the Beach Boys in 1972 or 3.
Perhaps Carnegie hall, but somewhere in the eastern part of the United States.

I saw The Beach Boys perform Surf’s Up at the Arena in St Louis in 1975 with Chicago. The Chicago brass section played with The Beach Boys during the performance of the song,

He sung it great. Coolest Surf's Up cover overall goes to the Punch Brothers though

Imagine having to master (or at least tune out) the multiple fractional tempo changes in the middle section if you didn’t grow up obsessing over the song and had to learn in in a short time….haha. Like Sinatra trying to learn Lush Life on the fly…lol.
