Arthur hated John not because he ditched them and came back, he hated John because he ditched them, came back and then refused to acknowledge that his wife and son are actually his. Look at how Arthur's attitude towards John changes after Angelo Bronte's Mission.

Thing is, Arthur probably felt this way because he still missed his kid, and felt such anger towards John because he has the gift of a child, but wishes to throw it away, which is something Arthur never wanted to do for his own kid. (Even if he wasn’t always there for his kid, he still tried to be there when he wasn’t being hunted.)

It always made me a little sad how Abigail can’t read.

When I was playing I don’t think Arthur had a romantic interest in Abigail, but rather treated her more like his little sister. He seems protective of her and maybe it’s because like me his character felt pity toward her.

Also, Arthur had a son who died…which broke him. John had a son that he just up and walked away from. Arthur didn’t like the fact that John would just throw away something that Arthur viewed as a blessing (a child/family). This also explains Arthur doing everything he could in the end to save John and John’s family.
