Another round of talking! This time out:
- What will Tamiya's next 1/32 kit be?
- How do I define good engineering?
- Shitty modeling memes
- Thoughts on rivet counters
- Preventing tweezer ping
- Who'll take up the WWI vacuum left by Wingnut's demise?

I really like your point on rivet counters.

I agree with you 100% that most accuracy problems would be missed - case in point, I recently built the Trumpeter F6F Hellcat - I was told over and over that area behind the cockpit was screwed up, had too much bulge etc. Oddly enough that completed model sitting on my shelf still looks like an F6F Hellcat. Anyone not already knowing that there was supposed to be an insurmountable problem with the kit would have absolutely no idea that this kit is supposedly soooo bad that it is not worthy of the effort or the money spent on it.

Came for Rant, stayed for the intro music.

For the good old tweezer issue I have had some good results in applying a layer of liquid mask (I use Gunze) to the inner surface's and let dry. Well Bob's your uncle, you will have, albeit temporary, a grippy slightly spongy inner surface.

totally and fully agree that bad kits are a pain and should be avoided. Thanks for saying that out loud.

What about the big brother of tweezer ping: the clothes peg snap? Same thing, equally annoying. Even more so if the snap occurs with a part with freshly applied paint on it.

And in the case of parts lost due to snaps & pings, there's the wacky follow-up phenomenon of post-scratch-build rematerialization: lose a part -> look all over for it in vain -> end up scratch-building a replacement -> the lost part suddenly appears. :D

Another great discourse, I agree with you about over used memes, but is always some on who it is new to. As for the next Tamiya project. I think they will step back form 1/32 and leave 1/32 to HK, Trumpeter and Zukai Muria. With Tamiya's level of skill they can deliver close to 1/32 levels of detail in 1/48, which has much more appeal to a wider international customer base in therms of the size of the models. I agree with you that rivet counters is now an over used slur. I think there will always be some who rivet count to provoke, but that is to be expected.

I was never bothered about WNW's WW1 stuff but was super interested in that Avro Lancaster. Just my luck they disappear before it ever shows up.

What rivet counters I don't like is when they say the paint scheme is wrong because you didn't use the right paint.

W00t! Doog answered my questions :-D. Still making sacrifices to the Tamiya gods for a 1/32 P-38, but I doubt that will happen this decade...

Apparently the wheel way box fouls the wing fit when putting them together ? Seen a few modelling channels mentioning this especially the foil adventures mustang build

A tweezer comment. I have two pair of expensive Swiss Rubis tweezers and they are simply terrific - but cost about $30. A while back I stumbled upon a eBay site that sells "Swiss" tweezers fir cosmetic work. These are small - about 3" long. They're stamped as "made in Switzerland." More importantly, they have that precise "Rubis" feel - the tips meet perfectly along the whole angle. After nearly a year's use, they've proved excellent - a different experience front the "made in Pakistan" tweezer packs. I've found that small is better for tweezers and use these (I have 3 pair now) more than any others and they're great. Search " Pointed Minit Splinter Tweezers" on eBay and you'll find them. For $10 counting shipping they're a terrific deal. (And I'm going to try a ceramic tip pair as suggested.) Good tweezers are as important as sharp knives and good nippers. And cheaper than kits.

Im thinking about 4 kits in 32nd. P38, spitfire mk1, il2m, and ki61. All of those can be made into other versions pretty easily to save money. What i want? Korean war era corsair, helldiver, tigercat, val, Kate, p47D. I can only dream
..lol

great engineering: tamiya's 1/32 mosquito wing to fuselage join. It just goes in, tiny bit of force gives you a confident *click* and that's that.

Meng has released the Focker DR1 which was/is a WNW kit. Reasonable price too. Hope they continue with more.

Tamiya badly needs to redo the 1/48 A-10 Warthog. I'm anticipating for Revell's SR-71 in 1/48 coming out next year and the Zvesda SU-57 1/48. Yes great engineering is easy assembly and great parts separation for painting.
